Any advice over buying replacement handle bars for an 1150, mine have been bent since crashing at Christmas, 75 pounds seems too steep for handle bars from a breakers, I've looked at renthals, just not sure about drilling holes for the heated grips, are the 1200 bars much different ? Thanx dj

1200 bars are alloy, and oversize, they also dont have the centre brace

if you do get other bars, just remember you will get more vibration, standard bars have vibration inserts in them (just past the controls) thats why they are a bit more expensive.

Thanks for that, rebuilt the bike from a write off 5 years ago. Been checking eBay since, I don't mind a bit of fabrication or modifying, just can't justify 75 plus p&p for for a second hand set, read a few threads about fitting renthals, just not to sure about drilling the bars

Just to add a little insight into experimenting with bars. My present 11GS had standard bars which one side was slightly bent. I had a shoulderblade prob which meant that they were cramping up after a few big days touring around.

I had broken a K11LT and just thought I would try the bars one night and changed 'em over pronto. Next morning I was ready for road drill vibes and there was none. The bars had less vibes than the GS bars and they were more ergonomic and don't have a centre bar!

Unless you try you don't know and even though they might not suit anyone else, there are alternatives. The BMW GS bars are a bit of a work of engineering but that doesn't mean they must work perfectly just because BM made 'em.

The only engineering thing I did was used the K11LT bar end weights as they were a bit heavier.

The only thing is they are a bit harder on full lock with a tankbag:augie

They cost me nothing but replacement bars are cheap enough from M/WKs or similar.

I even took the angle grinder to them to get the Heated Grips to fit:D

I got my spare set on ebay:thumb2
Item number : 250614712485

cost you more to modify to other bars, with no benefit.

Thanks a lot for the advice, going to re read about fitting renthals, also going to check eBay, just need to buy the right bars and do the job

There is a set on EBAY now, item no. 250614712485

I replaced my bars with Renthal fatbars for ergonomic reasons and I am chuffed with the results. I paid 85 pounds for the bars which was a lot but it was a total cure. I didn't drill the bars at all, I rewound my heated grips so the lead came off the inboard end of the grip, made up some inserts from ally bar for the end weights and glued them in. Stunning job. The bars are oversize so I had to buy Reikon adaptors and these sit on top of Migsel risers all of this on an 1100GS from '99. The vibration issue is non-existent to me, I can't feel any difference at all. Most of the vibes on my bike come from the drive train up through the seat of my pants anyway.

What I lost in money I got back tenfold in comfort value and usability.:)

That sounds a better idea, which model bars did you use, just going to see how much a riser kit will cost, just an idea are the 1200 grips any different

Lets see what you spend your money on:D
I m sitting on the the seat to be comfy, you must be sitting on the bars :nenau

Renthal Twinwalls. Can't remember any more than that. They may have a part number on them, so I will look tomorrow for you.
I also raised the seat height with spacers by about an inch and fitted Fastway pegs too so they are a bit lower. The transition from sitting to standing is real easy on the knees now and my shoulders don't suffer from pain on long day rides.

I only sit on the bars when I'm riding backwards so I don't get frightened of what comes next:augie

Put Renthal Fatbars on mine too, muuuuch improved and little or no extra vibes through the bars.

Ey up Carl, What`s that cover youv`e got under the clocks? Is it homemade or bought? More pics please.

Thanks,

Carl.. can you post full details on the bars.. part number. and the 'risers/clamp' please.. including where you got them. I think that change of angle would really suit my long arms.

cheers.

Rewiring Heated Grips?

I replaced my bars with Renthal fatbars ....

I rewound my heated grips so the lead came off the inboard end of the grip,

How exactly did you do that. I had a quick aborted attempt at fitting Renthal Fatbars on my 1150 GSA last week end ...dont ask broke one of those rubbish plastic fule line splitters taking the tank off...

I am thinking of just fitting Oxford Products Hotgrips instead.

Any tips appreciated,

Tnx Mike
