Morning All,
I think my 1150 GS starter motor is dead. Motobins sell them for £125+VAT. Is this a good price?

Also, I'll want to get my existing one repaired. Any recommendations?

More fettling this week will hopefully determine what's wrong with it.

Dead?

Have you taken it off and had a look? does it go round when you turn it? if not you'll probably find the magnets have come off.

better price than some on ebay.
any warranty with it ;)

At the moment it's totally dead. I've not had time to check yet but it might just be a blown fuse.

Summary:

At the weekend I took it off to service it as it was getting a bit sticky. I cleaned and lubed the shaft then inspected the brushes.
When I removed the end cap I saw the plastic disc that's used to hold the brushes in place was broken into three bits.
I put it all back together again and I can turn the motor by hand.
I put it back on the bike but pressing the starter button does nothing. No noises, no dimming dashboard lights. Nowt.

Hopefully I've been dumb enough to forget to reconnect the power but I'm also open to the fact it needs repairing.

When I take it off again for inspection maybe I will see an obvious problem.

So basically, it was working before I took it off to "fix" it. Typical.

Ah! yes the keeping fixing it till it's broke syndrom :) we all been there at some point.

I'm know you can buy spare parts for these starters, whether they can supply to the public I'm not sure, but if it's just broken bits then a motor factors maybe able to repair it surprisingly cheaply ?

Roddy, sort of correct. Those plastic pieces fell out when the and cap was removed.

There is a spring in there too and I don't know if I got it the right way round.

I need to fix it some more whilst :jager . That'll sort it.

Mike that's great.

I think the source of the problem might be the fact the plate that holds the brushes and the spring in place is broken in to three pieces. If I attach the spring it doesn't get held in place and, therefore, cannot press down the brushes as it is supposed to.

Hopefully I can just get that one bit but I may have to get a new starter in the interim and repair the original later on.

Rob,
I stripped mine down the other week and found out the hard way that the spring also clips onto the started body, not just the plastic.

I found that it was easier to put everything together on the motor, then put the spring on last. It would be easier if you had 3 hands, but it's not impossible.

Good luck with it.

That is for a non-genuine 'pattern'

an original Valeo is nearly £200.

or there's a refurb/exhange for around £110.

There's also the far too glamorous for its own good 'mitsubishi' for around £260. no glue so no sudden death when the original or pattern valeo decides to fall to pieces.

I for one would be very interested to know THAT items part no... maybe find out what vehicles it is fitted to as standard (if any) so I can source one for a more reasonable price when the time comes.

To be honest i think the original design is flawed. And I'll be loathe to replace it with the same, refurbed or not.

Didn't I hear/read somewhere that some cars use the exact same starter motor?

The Valeo starter motor from a Citroen 2CV should have the right direction of rotation. :nenau
You will probably need to use the gear mechanism and gear housing of the original starter motor.
Might be worth a shot if you can find a cheap used one.

Repair sets are available but quite expensive:

Or alternatively a new pattern one from ebay Germany for 69Euro + shipping costs.

I got my old starter rebuilt locally and the lad said that the internals matched an old valeo starter fitted to the smaller petrol engined Peugeot 305 models

I'll give that a shot.

I still have to replace that broken plastic disc though as I'm unable to get the spring to push the brushes down.

I'm taking it down to my local garage today. He says he can get rebuild kit for me.
