Teasdales gave me the glad tidings that my ABS pump has died. As a new one is £1800 + Fitting there is no way I can afford this on a 9 year old bike.
I have the offer of a used pump for £50 taken off a friends bike. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to fit these. or am I wasting my time. The dealer has quoted me £250 to fit.

Thanks steve

If it is the right part then its just pipes wires and bolts, if you were closer I could seriously undercut the dealer for fitting it, find an independent BMW mech nearer you :thumb2 or pop over to Wales for a weekend :D:thumb

You need to make it clear what pump you're talking about.

The simple ABS pump or the Servo/ABS pump.

Two entirely different beasts which aren't interchangable.

And one is cheap to fix and the other can be expensive. Or remove them from the bike altogether.

And £250 to fit is a lot for such a simple job.

Teesdales tell me that my ABS is a non powered servo ABS and therefore it is only a main dealer who can install this. Can anyone comment if they agre with this (I understand that the way to tell is that a powered servo has a buzz when the brake lever is pulled - mine doesn't)

Well I can't hear your bike fromhere, but my servos certainly 'wine' when I touch the brakes... so I guess you don't have it... you could always take off your tank and have a look if your hearing is bad :D

Anyone else smell sh1te?

There isn't much on these fairly simple bikes that Steptoe or even lesser mechagods can't fix.

If it's non-powered is that the earlier simpler system?

Jus scrap it anyway, get it replumbed without the ABS.

Absolute 110% bollox.

No special tools or diagnostics are needed.

I think you need to establish exactly which ABS system you have fitted.
Either ABS 2 or integral ABS (the servo shite).
What make calipers are on the front?.
Have your ABS rings got holes in them or are they toothed alloy ones?.
Is your bike twin or single spark?.I dont think the singlesparkies had servo brakes.
I changed an ABS 2 unit last week--all pretty straightforward.

lioke steppers says above no special tools or diagnostics are needed

But the system goes thru a "Bleed Test" on the diagnostics system to confirm its is serviceable

You Will know if it's not serviceable I can assure you!

I think he means non servo or non powered ABS :augie Are you asking a question that you already know the answer to? :pullface

Not at all, sounds a very strange thing for a DEALER? to come up with.

Hi Steve

Just found your thread......

Given what Teasdales have told you so far, in my opinion, I would ask for a fellow UKGSer near you or a proper BMW main dealer, to read any fault codes and reset your ABS BEFORE you start tinkering with the unit. Alternatively, there's a "how to reset ABS" on here somewhere.

It might start working again after a reset.

Good Call Well worth a try BUT it Depends what model ABS you have ABS II is an easy reset but servo I think requires a GS911 or Dealer PC

ABS II or Non Servo has two rectangle warning lamps with ABS in each one and when you turn on teh ignition they should flash together (if they flash alternately you have a fault and the abs is disabled) if they flash alternately after you start the engine its a battery voltage problem and a starter strip / battery replacement will probably cure this)

For Servo ABS you will have a Triangle in the top lamp and it flashes rapidly on switching on the ignition until it has carried out self tests and then settles to a blinking pattern

Installed replacement ABS Pump

Thanks to all who guided me through the install of the replacement ABS Pump - this went fine.
Could I get some advice on what I now need to do to get the ABS & Brakes up & and running etc ie does the system need filling & bleeding etc

Sorry - first crack at this kind of stuff and the manuel gived no clues - but I learn fast!

Read back through the posts and you'll see no one actually knows what type of abs you have on your bike - Jaythro is asking the right questions - without us knowing for sure which abs or servo you have you'll get different advice.

They both have completly different bleeding methods.
