Is it straight forward to do this job? My Haynes Manual says go to the dealer.

Plenty of info on the subject matey.. just do a search in the technical section. sit back and read... and decide what method suits you.

From what I gather, you need to go the dealer for this - they have some special tool that does something fancy that means they can charge you about £100 for the privelage. I had mine done by CWs a few weeks ago - I don't believe you need to take it to a dealer if its non-ABS.

I spoke to Darren at CWs and he said that many aspects of the servicing could be done at home but this was one piece he said the dealer needs to do.

Servicing the brakes on a 2001 GS is no different than if the ABS didn't exist. The brakes are non-servo, so there's nothing special to do. You only need to go to the dealer if you have servo brakes.

Like tony said, do a search in the tech section and have at it.

As others have said;do a search. You can have trouble getting spongieness out of the system, especially if you have ABS (which has its own bleed points).I have just replaced my hoses with HEL ones and had the spongieness problem but reading through the tips on here i fixed it.
Remember though, brakes are rather important and if you dont feel confident in doing the job, take it to a dealer.

I have the ABS version (no servo though) and you can bleed it as the ABS wasn't there. I had (still have) the lever a bit spongy and decided to bleed also on the ABS points. No air has come out and it got no better.

Again that is the deal: if you feel confident and you have a good backup plan in case things go wrong, go for it. Otherwise, just take it to the dealer.

I did mine a couple of weeks ago, followed the PDF on the advrider hall of wisdom (abs 3 service)

Going along with the haynes, clymer, bmw service disk and this from start to finish took about 2 hours, which included cleaning everything.

I used a solo bleeder thing from halfords which seemed to do the trick.

Getting the tube into the bleed points on the abs unit was a bit of fun!

Only thing is taking the tank off, unless you hook up a fuel IV then you may flatten the battery (with all the switching on and off). I did! :( , my battery has always been poo.

Crap that came out was shocking, colour of oil... it was something I was not too sure about but I'll definately not worry about it too much in the future and probably change the fluid every year now.
The ABS filler adaptor will be somthing I'll make for next time, BMW charge £20.00 for a new breather hose which has the two large filler screws and vent hoses. Seeing the level as it drops would have been handy and I'd have probably used less fluid.

Did lots of checks prior to hitting the road and went to the industrial estate close by to do a couple of test emergency stops.

Now over 1000 miles later they are just fine.

I'm no mechanic but everything seems to be good, no warning lights, abs pull off test just the same.

Go for it! thats what I'd say Good luck :beer:
