Replacing them (after having them re-lined) is not a problem.

Doing it and getting the springs in place is proving a bugger!

Any wise counsel would be appreciated!

Fit the spring with the coil to the back was something my journeyman told me

Then they don't try to ping off as much

Also Double check the ends There are a couple of model of Airheads that have an "offset length of lever"

So the long one with the further out reach goes on the bottom so that when you press the lever it will spread the shoe with the action of the cam

except he is doing shoes not pads.
Bugga, adjusts me glasses, dang, that was a waste of time, oh well, it might help someone else. :green gri

Oh, Drum brakes, haven't done them in years, I just used a good strong spring puller for them nasty strong springs. Last ones I did was on my grandfathers 1960 Ford Popular, front and back.

I’d recommend fitting new springs, my drum wouldn’t fit and my local friendly bmw agent said the springs must be replaced, he was right!

Put in place with shoes not flush .. then push .
Job done, 10 seconds max.

Job done. I remembered I'd done it previously a la Steppers!

Just for future reference....

Connect the springs to the shoes.

Locate the lower left shoe on the lever/cam. Also the lower right.

Locate the semi circular recess on upper left shoe on the pivot peg.

Hold the left shoe to stop it springing off. I used a narrow wooden lever resting on the slight ridge around the inner final drive to push the right shoe so that it's upper recess located on the peg!

As Neil suggests, typing that took longer than actually doing it!

Could you secure the left shoe with the retaining clip (I am sure that is what I did on cars) and then force the right shoe over by hand - then secure

What was the braking surface like?

Mine showed up 'pulsing' on the MOT brake tester.

Skimmed <0.010" and the drum was round.

Really smooth brake action now, and great for low speed / manouvering control.

I've yet to take it on a decent run and the MoT isn't due until next month. However there's a big improvement in the braking. As in ... I now have some from the rear brake!
