I'm busting a gut trying to replace the swing arm on my '82 R100RS. I've already got a broken rib which is a bit of a bother, it isn't helping things at all. I think the rubber sleve between the gearbox and the swing arm is in the way, but judging from the difficulty I had getting it on the swing arm when it was off I'm not sure if it's possible to get it on after installing it (the swing arm) Any suggestions welcome. Please. Both the shocks are off.

They are a bit of a bugger to get on and I assume you have alrteady got it onto the swingarm. I am sure there will be better suggestions comming along but basically you have to put the swingarm in position then fasten the propshaft to the gearbox flange then pull the rubber bellows onto the gearbox and fasten the jubilee clip. It is difficult to do but a home made tool made from a piece of wire will help to pull the rubber on. I also think that there was something on here about some of the after market gaiters being a bit tight.
An old spoke it the best thing. bend it back on it's self leaving a 1cm bit after the bend and then form the other end into a handle. You'll have it fitted in seconds.
Are you saying that the best way to get the poxy naffing swing arm back is to take the boot/bellows thingy off, then install the swing arm, and then put the boot/bellows thingy back? Is it really possible to put it on when the swing arm is in place? I'm having great difficulty in wiggling the swing arm into position, and it looks like it's the boot/bellows thingy that is stopping it.
I have been known to put the new gaiter in a bowl of very hot water, then fit it..

To be honest, it was all a matter of wrong attitude: "this bastard isn't going to go in" or, more generally, "this bastard isn't going to.....", just fill in the dots as required. I get into that mode every now and again- a self-fulfilling prophecy mode, never seem to learn.

I did wonder what the fuss was all about
They can be a tight fit with the boot on. I've knicked a couple trapping them between the frame tubes.
