Replacing the TPS on an F800

I've got a 2011 F800GS which I've had for just over a year it's done about 16k miles. It's got the stalling and rough idle when warm problem that many other people have. BMW did fix it just before Christmas by replacing the idle valve actuator, but it came back a couple of months ago and the bike isn't under warranty anymore.

I've replaced the plugs and the fuel pump (just the pump, not the whole assembly), tried a different idle valve actuator, checked that the breather hoses are routed correctly and not pinched or kinked. I have an Accelerator Module fitted. GS-911 only registers an intermittent short on the heated grips, but no other faults. The problem manifests itself on every ride.

I currently suspect the TPS because if I turn the bike off, then back on and do a TPS reset it idles okay again. Of course, it could just be that something else is going on whilst I'm doing the reset. It idles:bounce1 badly/stalls even when the heated grips aren't complaining of the short, so I don't think that's a problem.

When I replaced the TPS on an old R1100, there was much faffing around checking voltages, but I can't find similar instructions for this bike. Does anyone know if it's just a plug-N-play change?

It could also be the coils, but I'm not convinced I can check them properly myself.

Any chnace that you are opening the throttle, ven just apying oressure to it, when you turn the bike on? The TPs on these models, IIRC, does a reset each time you turn the ignotion on, setting the idle position to where the throttle is. If there is vene the lightest pressure on teh cable it is possible for that idle position to be set at just off the loose throttle position. Then, when you do allow the throttle to fully closed it goes to a "negative" position i.e. more closed than it knew it could be. There were quite a few cases F800 riders doung just this and getting a really poor idle.

It might be that you have not got enough free play on the cable? Turn bike on with cable pulling slighty on the throttle, setting the idle position slightly off; then when ridng the cable does allow it to return completely giving a negtaove position compared to when you started. When you then turn it off an don it resets again and all appear to be fine..

Thanks for the response, I don't think that's the case though. I've been careful the past few weeks to not even touch the throttle when I start the bike. Once it's started idling badly, I need to have the throttle open some to get it to start and stay alive again.

If anything,I was thinking of taking some Affleck out of the throttle cable, Just having it open the slightest amount asked the bike to idle nicely.

If BMW fixed it less than a year ago, then surely that component is still under warranty even if the bike itself is out :nenau

It'd only cost you a phonecall to find out.
 
That's probably true and worth a phone call.

The only thing putting me off is the trouble I had with the dealer in the first place getting them to fix it originally.

I've been experimenting with opening and closing the throttle, like in a TPS reset, but with the ignition off and that also seems to fix the problem. So today's new theory is slightly sticky butterflies staying open.

Hi, i'm currently trying to do a deal on a new F800GSA and i live in Wiltshire myself.

Who was the dealer you had problems with so i can avoid.
