Replacing USB power supply with din socket on 1250gs

Looking to replace the USB socket on the dash of my 1250 with a good old din socket like what's fitted to a 1200lc. Power output of the USB is pretty feeble and I have a dual USB outlet that fits to a din socket that is fairly pokey.

Anyone know of a hot swop solution for my quandary? Ta in advance.

If the feed to the USB is 5v then you’re stuffed. You won’t be able to just fit a socket.
 
Went ahead and ordered the Fast Charge USB socket from Nippy Normans. Juicy price, but at least I'll have the right tool for the job while on the trip. @redaprilia - thanks for the guidance, much appreciated (y)

Just be aware, the one I had wasn't totally waterproof, they say they are but that wasn't. I had to replace mine, it let me down whilst on a trip. When I got the new one I made a better seal around the rubber top cover (not the rectangular caps) using some self amalgamating tape, just to be sure. Fair do's to NN they have offered to replace the one I've returned, we'll see. The blurb says if you remove the rubber cap it's not covered, apparently it damages the seal, but the seal damaged itself just by being on the bike.

Apart from that it's a better alternative to the original USB supplied.
 
I think the USB outlet has failed on my 1250GS - just need to test and confirm. I noticed the posts above - I'm curious as to whether (and how) the NN offering differs from all the identical-looking items on eBay, for example eBay item number 156549865029 (not sure whether we're allowed to post eBay links here?) at 1/3 of the price?

Any thoughts?

the NN device is a smart fast charger in the USB-C slot and from a 12V input will deliver power at a wide range of voltages so it could possibly run an Aocci type device using the 12V USB-C supply or fast charge an iphone at 9V/2.2A. The NN device also has a non-smart USB-A slot for slow charging power banks, camera batteries or a phone not being used for navigation.

your Ebay device is a bog standard 5V slow charging device with none of the smart technology to adapt to the needs of different devices. It looks like it has 2x USB-A slots. If you only need 5V at a max of 2A then it will be fine. This is only supplied by one of the slots. The other slot offers just 1A.
 
I must confess I haven't yet fitted the NN item to my 1250GS. If the ebay items are listing the same output wattage then it makes sense to go that route.

it's not - the max power output of the Ebay item is 5x2.2 =11W at 5V

the NN device states a max of 36W (12V at 3A) and will typically negotiate to 9V with an iphone at 3A, so 27W. The NN will also happily supply a dumb device like a camera battery with 5V at 1A from the 2nd socket.

the choice of charging device depends on the needs of what is being plugged in. Just using dumb devices then use the Ebay job, using a smart device with heavy consumption if being used for navigation then you need to take advantage of the NN offering up to 36W.

you just have to make sure the devices with a USB-C port actually have the smart protocols to adjust the voltage and current based on a negotiation between the smart power source and the device using the power.

Some of the cheaper mirroring devices have a USB-C port and need 12V but do not have the smart tech to negotiate with a smart charger. You would need a charger that can be manually switched to 12V.

Similarly, many of the cheaper chargers will only output 5V from the USB-C socket as they are not smart. They are effectively voltage regulators not smart chargers.

It was a bit of a learning curve when I was looking at a portable way to use USB-C to charge my laptop (needs 15-20V). At home, when extending with a monitor, I only need one USB-C cable to the monitor as this powers the laptop and transfers all data.

Yes, I should probably have been more specific.

It can be smarter and more powerful, but I’m sure there are cases where that’s not true.

Just to check in on this again: NN were out of stock but have just received some more, so I ordered one which has been delivered.

Quick question re the cable - will any USB-C to USB-C cable deliver the necessary negotiation to charge at the max possible rate, or do I need a specific cable? Planning to tour Norway this year and I’ll be navigating from the phone, so I’ll need a decent amount of power to keep it charged.

the max output of the device is 36W in fast charge mode so you need a cable that can handle that wattage, such as these anker jobs that will handle 60W, so plenty of redundancy
