Riding to work this morning I noticed my oil light coming on sporadically on braking / accelerating. Late in so didnt have time to check but I guess I could do with a top up.

No manual at work so very briefly, what grade of oil should I get on the way home? and any recomendations (ideally that I can get from a garage without a schelp to a bike shop...)

Ta...

That is not an oil level warning light --- its a pressure warning light, you better hope its a dodgy switch, you could have just shortened your engine life expectancy quite considerably.

I agree.

I've been in the Courier Industry since 1992 & have had to explain to several van (owner) drivers that the red light does not signify that a top up is required, it's more of an "Imminent Engine Death" light if you continue to use it:eek:

Alas, one failed to heed my words & quit the business after wiping his second cylinder head......

Do an 'oil light ' search here and and on the AdvR site.
Most likely cause is the wire to the switch earthing out due to insulation having melted where clipped to engine fins. Simply unclip and use insulation tape - two minutes, two cents. Could also be the spade clip at switch needs cleaning and tightening.
If it is the switch it is cheap and easy to replace. Do not panic, whatever others say!

Thanks Dom

Have some biltong on me.

I promoted your countryman Pieter Dirk Uys at the venue I manage a few weeks back - very funny guy..

No, don't you panic- its nothing to worry about.

before you decide its just a switch,

check it first.

:D :D :D

well the end of the story was took the bike to Joe Duffy's at lunchtime to book it in for a 20K service next week. I mentioned the blinking oil pressure light to Paul and he got the mechanic to check it there and then

Turns out it was simply a bit low on oil - they topped it up and seems fine. No blinking lights anyway.

Good service btw from the Duffy fellas. Just girding loins for the sevice bill next week...
