Hi everyone,
My GS came with some (admittedly very lovely) bar risers fitted, which brought the bars closer as well as higher. Being a taller lad I've removed these. However, I can't work out where the 'standard' position/angle for the bars on the top yoke clamps should be!

Honda's had punch mark on them, which lined up with the split on the bar clamps, to reset everything to - is there any such guide on the BMs?

Mike

According to the BMW manual, the bars should have a punch mark, which should line up with the split in the clamp.
By coincidence, I was looking for a mark last night, without success.
Not sure how obvious it is, or whether its actually hidden once the clamps are on.

If you haven't had the switchgear and levers off the bars just leave the bolts slightly loose and then sitting on the bike set the bars so that the levers are at the most comfortable angle for your wrists then nip up the clamp bolts

Interesting.....

Admittedly, I was wearing my leathers and rushing when whipped the risers off the other day, but a punch mark was the first thing I looked for.

Has anyone found it?

I'm happy to dilute their position to taste, but my experience with bars has been on Jap bikes - and on them the position of the clutch and brake master cylinders is such that they are level with the bars turned to allow fluids to be checked - but only when they're in the standard position!

There is no punch mark,
Set the bars and levers where you want them, you can always turn the handlebars to get the reservoir perfectly level if you're really anal about fluid checks:thumb

It's amazing that you even have to offer such blatantly obvious advice. Makes you wonder how some people manage to own and ride a motorcycle :D

Now that you mention it, I noticed the right grip was spinning backwards when I took the bars off. Is this normal? ;)

Its partly due to my anal nature.... and partly due to just wanting to reset everything to standard before I start tweaking things to my liking!
