This was just what I was after.
Before I go ahead with this, if I want to extend the C: partition and use some of the space currently allocated to D: do I have to format D: before I do this? Or will the program mentioned in the post above just "squash" everything up, without the need to format either drive?

It should in theory 'squash everything up' for you.
Don't even think about doing it though until you've done a fresh, full backup , just in case
