Hi

I want to respray my 1150. Any suggestions for good service in SW-London or Surrey. Ideally they'll need to do all stripping because I don't have a garage at present and I'll then be in a rental car :loopy while they do the job.

Do I then inform the DVLA that a friendly yellor gs has become a menacing black one?

I want matt black, any thoughts?

Thanks,

JJ

Despite my reputation for being a polishing fetishist,I have had a few matt black bikes ( 'proper' matt black ones...home aerosol jobs :D ;) ).

Matt black always ends up going greyish at any contact points unless you get it lacquered ...

There was a GS professionally matt blacked on here a few months ago.....

Will laquer keep it matt or take it to satin appearence?

JJ

Been contemplating a change myself but satin black rather than matt more durable.
Yes inform dvla of the change as you possibly could get hassle if its ran through the Police National computer and comes back as yellow and in fact you have had it resprayed, Police may wonder if its a bike on ghost plates :thumb

I`ve never seen a lacquered matt that is quite as matt as unlacquered...mainly because the subtle imperfections of the paint are 'smoothed' over.
It ends up a kind of eggshell....but certainly not shiny....ever so slightly duller than satin.
It looks well for it though.

Saw a lovely paintjob on telly a few weeks ago. It was sprayed metalflake red, then sprayed with satin black over the top. The whole thing was then polished until it was smooth and you just had an effect like red metalflake poking through the black. The whole thing was lacquered and it looked the dogz bollox. He also had red anodized wheel rims and polished stainless spokes :thumb

If you are near - try Shalford Coachworks just outside Guildford - they have done some car stuff for me (they do bikes too) and have been very good - father and son old-style place, and reasonable on price.

Harley Davidson are offering matt black on a bike now (think its called demin black). It's unlacquered and apparently wears/fades like a pair of jeans.
Might look cool on a GS.

Or it could end up looking like a 20 year old XR3 i used to own.

I would like to get my engine/gearbox stoved in shiny bright red .. all of it . With nice shiny stainless fastners.
Just thought I,d mention it.

Lindsay Henderson at Henderson Metal Cleaning in Piershill Lane at Jock's Lodge. He'll blast and then paint pretty much any colour you like in two-pack epoxy. He's a bit of a master with a spray gun and very reasonably priced. I introduced Mike O to him last year and he had Lindsay paint his rocker covers.

0131 661 0870 or I can introduce you. He's the brother in law of a friend and colleague of mine.

Thanks Schtum. I will keep a note of his details.
I dont think it would be as easy as it seems without dismantling most of the engine to get a decent job.

I think you're right. Of course, I also know a man who'll dismantle and rebuild the engine for you if you don't feel like doing it yourself.
