Hi All,

I made a copy of my entire C: to an external hard drive that I want to restore as the C: is now full of crap.

Can I just format the C: using the cmd prompt, turn the computer off and put the Acronis restore CD in the machine? Will the computer recognise that the backup is on the external Hard Drive?

I dont want to format the C: until I know how to restore the data.

I'm using XP Proffessional

Thanks
Garry

You don't need to format C: when restoring a previous backup. However once you start the process, you have to finish as the windows installation you are overwriting will be toasted once Acronis starts anyway.

I have reverted to a previous backup several times using Acronis. Start the PC up with the emergency disk in your CDROM. It loads a basic version of Acronis running in its own operating system, and then you can choose which backup you wish to restore. The basic programme will still see USB and network drives. We have used this at work a number of times to restore PC loads such as our on line banking PC when the Hard drive died.

or you can open acronis in windows and use the "recovery" option on the "home" screen. very similar process to booting from the emergency disc, but quicker. pc will shut down & reboot into acronis recovery mode.

Thanks for the responses.

Cookie - That was going to be my next question!

Very obvious, but make sure you backup your emails and any files you need onto removable media/another drive first ;)

Hijack - sort of (sorry)

I tried to use Acronis to reload my C Drive image onto a new, larger hard disk.

The blue background mini-Acronis loaded off the CD (and diskettes which I also tried), the screen went black and the Red/White Acronis logo appeared in the top left corner and it said "Loading, please wait". The cursor flashed for a few seconds then stopped and nothing happened after that.

Anyone ideas please?

In the end I had to clone the disk using an external caddy via USB1.1 (long story - took 24 hours to transfer 80GB!)

I need to know how to use Acronis for future recoveries - at the moment it won't work if it repeats as above.

Many thanks in advance

A
