I'm a new biker and am interested in getting a 650 GS. Does anyone know how to get one restricted to 33bhp and how the restrictor works. Also how does this affect the performance? I guess the acceleration would be less and would the top speed be lower? Ta.

If you go for the later fuel-injected model, all there is is a throttle stop bracket that's held on with two security Torx bolts.

I can't imagine it's worth more than about two quid!!

I took Cate's bike to Blue Bell in Crewe to have it restricted just over a month ago, the job takes 35 mins to o, you have to pay for a full hours workshop time and the bracket as already mentioned here.

It's not just the bracket, the engine control module has a software re-flash too, in my opinion after the re-flash the bike is loads smoother and not as slow as you would think ;)

All of this done for £35!!!!!! :thumb2

The BMW dealer restricted mine when I got it - 06 Dakar.
Being new to bikes ignorance is bliss - plenty of power there for me and for what I want it to do - I've been off road with it a few times now and it's had no problems pulling through the mud - there's no motorway near me but I find is perfect around the country roads I travel - you don't have a chance to go very fast on them anyway.

Google: f650 33bhp - and have a read - most people say it's a perfect bike to get restricted - not a very noticeable performance hit:

Sounds like the perfect bike to restrict. Has anyone had it done in Ireland at a BMW dealer. Sounds like it's an easy job but knowing Ireland it'll cost a fortune to do.

If the Irish licence restrictions are the same as the UK, the important thing is the Certificate "proving" that the bike has been restricted.

This "validates" your licence & therefore your insurance, making it legal to ride on public roads.

I fitted mine today...

The part is about £3.50 and took me about an hour to fit, without any instructions and having no knowledge of the bike.

The restriction works by attaching the throttle cable to a different slot on the throttle actutator, this slot is further from the actutator spindle and so the throttle grip still turns all the way but the 'gearing' is changed so the actutator turns only about half way.

The part you purchase replaces the normal throttle cable bracket, specifically the bracket that bolts to the engine and holds the end of the throttle cable tubing. The cable tube has a thread on the end, it fits through a hole in the bracket and is held in place by a plastic nut. It also provides a new maximum opening stop for the actutator.

The only complication in fitting it is that the oil tank pipes get in the way a bit making it tricky to get to the bracket.

You'll need a T25 'torx' key to remove the fairing on the oil tank side of the bike, and the same size 'security torx' key (with a hole in the shaft) to remove the two bolts holding the bracket as these are security bolts with a small stud in the centre that stops a normal torx head from engaging.

According to the two dealers I spoke to there is no ECU or other changes to be made. Mine certainly rides fine and pulls well. :beerjug:

Hope this helps.
