Retain the shine...

Since getting my GSA a couple of years ago I’ve been slowly tinkering to return some of the shine that had worn away of the previous 15 years.

The bike was a really good example, but the exhausted was a little rusty and discoloured so I’ve put in some elbow grease to get it sparkling again. Now I’ve brought on arthritis, I’m keen to keep the uptake to a minimum. Has anybody got any tips to keep the discolouration at bay?

In my experience, its just hard work with auto sol i'm afraid. Some people brush harpic on their header pipes, but the bottom line for a really nice shine, is a cloth and Autosol.

Buy (what I think is common known as) horse bandage, and cut it into long strips, wrap around the pipe a couple of times with your autos paste and then pull each end in turn .....

That is the way I do it, with autosol and rags

NAFAIK but Wonder Wheels applied to the pipes prior to polishing removes quite a bit of the tarnish so makes life a bit easier.

When I got my 1150, I did a big job getting it to look brand new. I applied Gyeon RIM to the exhaust to keep it shiny but it only lasted about a week. It should have worked and I’ve always found their products to be excellent, so I suspect I didn’t remove all the polishing residue properly before applying RIM. I’ve been meaning to do it again but haven’t gotten around to it. It’s worth trying but the pipes will have to be literally sterile clean before applying it.

On an R850r / not GS;
are the downpipes Stainless too? (tried a magnet on them / it dont stick)
Which / what type of "Harpic" works?
How do you use it?
Can it damage anything in the cleaning process?

FYI magnetism is not a test for stainless steel . Some SS is magnetic and some is not . For some reason addition of nickel removes the magnetic properties .

If magnetic, could be stainless.
If non-magnetic, probably stainless. Could be titanium!

Hi I have used Harpic Power Max 10 with good results. I used a green scourer on the tuff bits using goggles and gloves then just wash off. Keep it off the aluminum though.
