Retro's 1150 re-born

Having reviewed my meagre resources, I've opted to freshen my bike up and get a few more years out of it ..... part-ex it wouldn't have been worth much as there were too many jobs needed, with 40k on the clock it's no spring chicken.

So, Mike at Cardiff Motorrad has the bike in bits as we speak. Work being carried out:

Wilbers replacement shocks
Useless BMW alarm out and into the bin
New clutch

found out this AM that the splines on the input shaft and clutch are shagged ... something to do with my less than respectful riding style ... the gearbox has to be bench stripped for the shaft to be replaced: the part is making its liesiurely way from Germany ... I think I need to tone down my quick getaways at red lights etc.

Whilst its apart, the H&B engine bars are being shot blasted and powder coated by a local firm (approx £25, bargain, would have cost that to do it myself with Nitromors and Hammerite - and it would have looked ratty if I'd have done it).

Also fitting a MiGsel GPS bracket over my speedo, and Fastway foot pegs.

That shite red seat, which I always hated, has been recovered by Digger in Newport, of which more anon.

All this work won't leave much change from 2 grand, but if I get another 3 years from this particular ABS(2) 2002 model 1150 then I'll be happy.

40000! hardly run in yet, mines 2001 hasdone over 70.000 and still omn the original clutch, think you will find that clutch / shaft wear is caused by that high bottom gear, espsciely if used in heavy traffic. Fit a lower ration bevel box (1100 is ideal) and see the improvement.

Matt, as you know KTM was an option but after some deliberation I quite like it where I am thanksAt least for now, at any rate.

Ref the gearbox issue, Mike's only seen this prieviously on bikes that have been wheelied a lot and run ragged off-road .... my riding isn't THAT bad ... or so I thought

Could be worse. I could have an out-of-warranty 1200

Collecting the bike tomorrow

I've been along to view it today as the finishing touches are carried out, and its looking fantastic. Mike at Cardiff Motorrad has been very throrough and done a superb job for a very reasonable price.

This rebuild would not have been viable if a franchised BMW dealership was involved! Will post up some pics soon.

Thanks for that Diggers linky, I have a second seat for my bike that I wish to modify. The work looks good, I'll have to pay a visit as Newport isn't too far away.

Mike, much as I recommend Digger he does, er, work to his own terms.

.... don't bother 'phoning him before 11AM

... He's usually on lunch between 12.00 - 1300

... the overheads on his premises must be very low Drive onto the rotting industrial past the scrap cars and look for the paint daubed 'DIGGER' sign, with the arrow pointing up the fire escape ... needs to be seen to be believed

But everyone I know who has had work done raves about it, this man knows his stuff

Its back in black

Not much to show considering the money that's been spent (even though I was very happy with the final bill), but the ride is transformed with the Wilbers shocks, reupholstered seat and fastway footpegs. Mike @ Cardiff Motorrad has done a superb job, its like riding a new bike.

Hi mate bike looks good, mike does a great job, and speaking as the owner of an aging 1100gs, thats important!!!

would be interested in knowing where you got the engine bars powder coated etc, mine look "tired" shall we say, and could do with a bit of tlc!

thanks, I did know of them, I wanted to get a wheel rim powder coated before xmas, but at that time they didnt have a shot blasting facility....seemed a very helpful bloke there tho'(da boss!)

The bike looks great. Mines recently just done 36k and I know it'll go on for years. Don't ever sell it.
