The DRZ was mothballed after the last rally in Wales earlier in the year. Covered in shit and with a broken sub frame, I decided to leave it and get a more practical bike. That was the F650 and it was practical when it worked. I didn't "gel" with it though. It lacked the soul that the little DRZ bitch had. Then someone nicked it...

I've been contemplating what to get next. On a Monday I'm yearning for my old 1150GS. On Tuesday I've talked myself into getting the Adv as it's not much more after all. By Wednesday I remember pulling the ****er out of the snow two year ago and so think a standard 1200GS would be easier to manage. By Thursday I've realised the 1200 will break down and the new Tenere is the ultimate solution. On Friday I've come to my senses: the tenere is a pig with shite suspension and poor build quality.

And then it all made sense. It doesn't matter what ******* bike you have Snoopy. You're wanting what you don't have. Stop and think what you do have...

The poor DRZ looks all sad in the corner. A long time has gone since I stripped it of its adventure gear. It doesn't have a tank, the battery is flat, side panels are missing and it's caked in dry mud.

Then I fell in love again ...

Since I've absolutely no intention of driving a bike down to Morocco again or doing 250 mile stints without petrol (because when does one really need to do that?). I've decided to make another DRZ Adventure!

Here's the stuff done so far...

  • Magura Bars
  • Rebored top yolk for fatbar
  • SS bolts all round
  • Engine back to stock, exhaust, snorkel the lot.
  • Stainless output shaft
  • Stainless wheel spacers
  • Braided lines front and rear
  • Black plastics & SM fender
  • Keyless ignition META immob

Here's the 'on order' list so far....

  • Happy Trails Pannier Rails
  • Touratech Zegas
  • Clarke 3.9Ltr Tank
  • Edge-2 Rear Light
  • Screen from picture - need to identify
  • Hand guards from picture - need to identify
  • 50w HIDs

Happy days. :beerjug: :thumb2

Where's the pic of your bike Snoops? :nenau:nenau

:blast

Just off to poke myself in the eye with a sharp stick :aidan

Seriously though, you got the right attitude, it's not what you think you should have but what you do have and how you use it (see my Supermoto thread in this section) - thinking you need something just leads to dissatisfaction 'cos nothings ever perfect (apart from my 1200 of course!).

Trouble is it's the 'what you do have and how you use it' bit that scares me in your case Snoops

Go, go, go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you not think it might be better to look at a bigger tank than 3.9 litres !!!

Pay attention at the back:blast , he said he's not doing 250 mile stints or riding to Morocco and back........................on 3.9ltrs it looks like he'll just be riding to the corner shop and back (maybe) :D

And the Zegas will be just to carry the bread and milk.

As usual I'm glad on the support for my latest project. :thumb2

If you turn your DRZ into something that looks as good as that one, then you will have my support. :thumb
The phrase "Silk purse from a sows ear." springs to mind though.
Good luck.

Its a beautiful story mate

Just not sure about the zega panniers. Do you really think a DRZ subframe is man enough to live with 20 kgs of box and frame, before you even fill them up with the shopping.

What sort of aftermarket headlight unit are you planning?

Admitedly a lot less of this is ad-hoc. I've been in contact with Happy Trails regarding the panniers over the past week as I want to make sure they are upto the weight. The subframe isn't brilliant but I've a Suzuki rack rated at 15kg. If HT don't come up trumps then I'll have something welded to this frame using some of the additional points used by HT.

For the front light I'll be ditching the entire front assembly. An aluminium subframe will come inside the suspension and host instruments and an Acer C530 GPS. A bespoke screen will go from low down up and over. Hella De Fog for low beam and I'm still trying to get the model of the main beam one (it looks like Hella only do a Xenon main beam but it's really expensive). These will be either side.

4Gal U.S (Clarke Tank), the Acerbis model only fits the 'E'. The 3.2 Gal is the IMS model.
