I've found several threads on heated grip failure/repair and replacement, but most relate to 1100/50s.
Mine's an 04 1200 on 48,000 miles and the RH heated grip doesn't any more. The other day it did and now it doesn't. In passing while ordering something else, the nice man at Motorworks said it's likely to be the wire around the very small push fit connector inside the switchgear housing but I had a good look last night and I can't see any obvious sign of a break in the wire.
Tried a multimeter between the two pins/connectors in both halves of the connector on both grips (did the still-working LH one to see if the comparison revealed anything), but couldn't get any reading at all on any of them, with the heated grip switch on or off. Might be because it's extremely difficult to get the probes in there (missus).
As you're probably picking up, electrics are a bit of a black art to me, although I bought a multimeter to try to disguise this and I have even used it to some effect (but on a 70's Bonneville). This mad wiring loom on the 1200 is a bit beyond me.
Any thoughts on how to test where the fault is and whether I should just spend £71 on a new grip? I don't want to take several days in the garage (well, not doing this anyway) and then spend the £71 anyway. I can live with the £71 if there's some way to make sure it will solve the problem, but equally, I'd be happier not spending the £71 if avoidable.
Final thought - living on the Isle of Man, the bike goes on the Steam Packet quite a lot and they usually lash it down with a strap round each grip. Given that the LH grips apparently fail due to regular pulling up onto the centre stand (see, I did read some threads), a bloody great ratchet strap round my grips can't be good for them, surely? They were both working after the last crossing, but that's not to say it hasn't contributed to the problem. I'll see if they can bring themselves to use the crashbars or something else to attach them to (I'm on there again this weekend).
Thanks, all!

Neil,

Not sure about the 12 but on the 1150 there is a connector for both grips under the tank, one of mine failed and it was down to a dirty connector. If your using your multimeter you can test for continuity at the connector that should tell you if any of the heating elements are busted in which case it's replace or repair.

Sorry can't be more specific but you will need to look at the 12's wiring diagram to suss out if you have a similar connector or someone can confirm.

Simon
