Ride to Fort Bill

Coming from the south which way would you go? I've listed a few options breaking it into two parts.

First part Newcastle to Edinburgh:

A1 costal road.
A68 through Jedburgh.
Other?

Second part Edinburgh to Fort Bill.

Over the bridge, up to Perth and then up and over on the A86 past Loch Laggan.
Past Stirling and on the A82 through Glen Coe.
Other?

This is all part of a one day journey starting in Yorkshire so I'm looking for scenic riding roads whilst making good progress.

I've always preferred the A697 to the A68. Just watch out for the cameras.

I find the A1 a bit boring. Mostly busy dual past Newcastle and not particularly interesting rest of way. OK to make progress, sometimes unmarked lurk but not often. A68 is nice but quite a few cameras which aren't a problem but tend to be put where you'd overtake on a straight after being stuck on bends behind a caravan/lorry for the last 10 miles!

Cant find leedsdale on a ,ap so not sure on your starting point to suggest an alternative.

As Schtum mentioned the 697 is good.

When I came up from Yorkshire I used to go up the A1 and get off at Barton Park services and ride up through Piercebridge and pick up the 68 near West Auckland.

If you come up the 68 can put the kettle on for a quick brew. The 68 used to run past my driveway in Dalkeith, now its bypassed its a small detour onto the old 68.

They're all good for going north.............Or you could come up the A68 and then take a wee detour through Keilder and onto the A7/68 near Hawick..............Berwickshire coastal route is nice and short too north of Berwick-Upon-Tweed and often overlooked............St.Abbs is about eight miles from where I farm here in the Borders!

If you want to past Loch Laggan, you will have to go up the A9 from Perth to Dalwhinnie which is a shite of a road.

I zig zag up the Dales from Keighley, North Pennines, Borders and then Stirling, Callender, Tyndrum etc.

My return leg is along Loch Lomond and down past Glasgow, hence the east route going up.

It's looking like the A697 needs to be included on the first leg.

For the second leg the A9 will be avoided so it looks like we'll Green Welly it past Tyndrum

If you go thru' Tyndrum everybody stops at the Green Welly, but the food WAS better across the road in the Real Food Cafe. I say was, because I've heard dodgy reports about it recently so it may not be as good as it was....any body know?

It's looking like the A697 needs to be included on the first leg.

We have a house just outside Kelso and up there most weekends from North Yorkshire. We turn off the Motorway onto the A696 which joins the A68 at Otterburn. Its an entertaining ride. Great views into Scotland as you cross the viewing point at the Border, really worth a stop if the visibility is good and excellent grip on the way down the Scottish side. Keep going through Jedburgh and 10 miles on you enter St Boswells. Turn Right in the 30 limit just after the pub on your left with the village green on your right. Follow that road ( B6404 ) all the way to the T junction and turn Left on the A6089 signposted to Edinburgh.

Choose your route according to the weather, it's 3 decrees C and lashing with sleet here on the Moray coast at sea level!
I'm heading away for a few days and leaving on Thursday with the intention of camping at Tayvallich as daytime weather is good and night time temperatures are around 6 degrees, Applecross is expected to be hovering at zero and Aviemore probably 2 degrees below overnight
