Rideout : Hampshire to Dorset coast and back - 21st Sept 2008

Just got back from Salisbury Plain with Noel .... Dirty, tired but with a big smile on our faces ... We will give tomorrow a miss though ... might take a gentle bimble around the corner to the Ace Cafe .... for lunch.
 
I would love to come along. I'll be at the cafe for 10.00. Adrian's the name, riding a 1100 75th that Im sure some of you will recognise.

Just spent the last two hours trying to get the route installed... but I finally got there.. I think :D:(

Really looking forwrad to nice run in the Sun, it's been way too long
 
Just to highlight:

Meet at Loomie's Cafe at A32/A272 junction ready for a 10:00 off.

If you are aiming to get there for 10:00 and are late we may well have left.

Good idea to get there a tad earlier, especially if you are gonna want a cuppa, butty, slash etc....

That's fine chap, just make sure you don't have half the ride following you instead of me. ;)
(Easiest way is either leave at a stop, or wait until you are marking a junction, then let the rear marker know you are off when they get there).

I have just been accused, via PM, of having the intention of proving how fast I can ride and losing the rest of you.

I have replied via PM, but thought I would also bring the matter to light here, in case anyone else felt similar.


Firstly, let me state categorically that I have absolutely no need whatsoever to prove what I am capable of to anyone on any ride. Some know cos they have ridden the same pace as me. Some don't have a clue cos practically the only time they see me on a ride is sat at a junction waiting for them. It matters not which category people fall into.

Secondly, I organise these rides primarily for myself. I would do the ride regardless of other attendees so why should the way I ride be altered for others? ???
I ride the at whatever speed I choose to ride. That's faster than some and slower than others.

So what? ???

I did ask all attendees to read the rideout ettiquette thread I linked to in the thread:

If they had done so they would have read:
# Do not ride above your ability/limits to try and keep up. There will be a bike waiting for you at the next junction. There will be regular stops for a breather/fag break during which you can catch up safely. (Just because we have pulled over for a couple of minutes it doesnt mean we are having a fag break tho! -if the leaders lid is still on, he aint planning on stopping)
# Do not get pushed along by a faster bike behind you. Move over and let them through. Also do not ride harder than you feel comfortable/are safe too to keep up with others. Only play hard with people you know and trust. Slower riders, beware you may be holding up a faster rider and move over, let them past.
# If you are the faster bike, dont make stupid manouvres to get past (especially passing them on the left! ). Wait till they let you through, or find a safe place to get past.
Faster riders, please give plenty of room when passing and only go for a safe clean pass.
# It doesnt matter whether you ride like a foggy or a fanny, just go at your own pace.
# Its not a race and you wont get left behind. Just cos you cant see the bike in front doesnt mean youve got to ride like a loon to catch it up again. Take it steady, someone will be waiting somewhere.
# If everyone follows these simple ideas we can all enjoy a cracking ride, and have a good chat at the destination.


The rides are run using a marker system, so ALL on the ride get to choose the pace they wish to ride at, including the ride leader.
The point being it doesn't matter what speed you ride at. You aren't supposed to "keep up". You are supposed to ride at the speed YOU are happy with.
It doesn't matter if you can't see the rider in front as the next turn will be marked to show you the way regardless.

I would say though that when leading a rideout I would pace myself such that I could always/mostly see the next rider behind in my mirrors. It would seem a bit pointless if, as the leader, I just vanished into the distance and had to wait at every junction for the next marker to catch up.

For me, part of the fun of the group rideout is the fact that you're part of a group, and all riding together. If I want to go out for a high speed burnup, then I would do that alone, and not tempt any other rider into perhaps riding beyond their limits in order to keep me in sight, regardless of whatever riding etiquette may have been posted in advance.

but you are mssing the point which to let people enjoy the route at THEIR pace whether it be Fast or Slow in the knowledge that someone will be marking the junction to show the way...:confused:

For me, riding a bike is only ever a solo experience. The group part comes into play at the breaks when we chew the fat. If I wanted to be part of a group on the road I would take the bus. :nenau
My rides are purely a way of people having a fun ride on a route they don't have to navigate, as the route is pointed out to them. It is not a way for 10-30 people to come for a ride with me.
If the attendees choose to ride in smaller groups within the "group" according to chosen pace, that's fine.

How the attendees choose to ride is purely down to them.
Nothing I as the leader does has any bearing on that. They choose to open the throttle or not.
If people don't enjoy riding that way then there are plenty of other people organising rides that probably will meet their criteria.:thumb2
I certainly won't be changing the way I have run rides very successfully for the last 8+ years tho. :)

The scenery was absolutely fabulous, looking down at the south coast on the fantastic undulating roads was really superb ! :clap

As tail gun Charley I wasn’t at all bothered by the fact you were miles ahead .. Maybe the second guy might have been pressured to keep up as I always thought he had to mark the turnings/junctions for others .. But as you always waited at the junction then no big deal !

And it was nice meeting all the other faces although I will never remember who’s who .:blush
