Evening All,

Got my 1996 R1100GS out of the garage yesterday to take her for an MOT and the RID has stopped working. All of it, not a thing working, not bars, time, gear position etc.

I've checked the fuse but it seems ok. Everything else seems normal. Any ideas what I should check next?

mine used to freeze like that try unplugging it cleaning the connector block up. have you got hid bulbs fitted

I've tried disconnecting and cleaning the block but no joy. I have noticed that the light behind the display is working though. Should I replace the RID or am I missing something?

I'm guessing you've got HIDs that occasionally don't spark up correctly.

Take out the relevant fuse, leave if for a few seconds, replace it and I bet all will be well.

If it keeps happening think about relocating the ballasts

I've not got HID's.

No luck still, I've had the RID apart and cleaned all connectors I can see as well as the one under the tank. I can't see any damage inside the RID.

Is it time for a new RID? Bearing in mind my GS is the first bike I've had with a fuel gauge I'm wondering if it's worth circa £100 for a secondhand one, especially if it's not the RID at fault!

The RID has two sources of power and one ground (schematic link below). Measure that you have +12 at both RID pins. Also make sure you have a good ground.

If the back light is working and nothing else, then there is a possibility that moisture has got into the unit somehow and corroded one or more tracks on the Printed circuit board.

After you have checked the basics, suggested by Roger 04 RT and you are certain the wiring from the connector to the module is OK, (no breaks). Then, depending on your level of competency dismantle the module to look at the tracks. You may find corroded/broken tracks causing your problem. Sometimes corroded tracks can be bridged with wire provided there is enough track copper left either side of the break to solder too.

Good luck
