I must have been tougher when I was young. Before the M25 was even a twinkle in someone's eye I used to commute 50 miles from Bedfordshire to Sunbury-on-Thames. The summers were fine, especially 1976, but my memories of the winters are leaning down and warming my frozen hands on the exhaust.

So the GS handlebar protectors and heated grips are a huge step forward. But I've gone a lot further. I fitted a taller Secdem screen that can be adjusted to cut the wind blast, and I invested in a Gerbring heated jacket. I had both of these on the 'Carry on Dakar' trip. The heated jacket is particularly good at keeping core temperature up, but my lower half was cold and wet.

This week I fitted the Tucano handlebar muffs from Steptoe together with Gauchos. Wow. Never again will I call them sh*e-bags. I just wished I had the muffs and the gauchos when riding home from Morocco last month. Both bits of equipment came with neat storage bags to stick them in over the summer months. Well recommended.

But you could have got Gerbing gloves and trouser liners, been warm, and not looked like a refugee.

But after spending all that money, you'd be as poor as a refugee ;)

It's also the added wind and weather protection that you get with the gaucho. Plus the large storage pocket

Demongroover, you're too new & naieve to understand. Type "gaucho" or "shitebag" in the "search" icon at the top of threads. All wil be revealed, possibly to your horror

I feel this strange urge coming on to buy a shite bag next year  . Someone PLEASE come and give me a kicking

The Gerbing heated unit is a full jacket, not just a vest, so it includes heating for the arms. I found I can travel in almost any temperature with just four layers--a wicking layer, the Gerbing unit, plus my Savanna Jacket/Goretex insert. At times I have worn six layers in the past and still been cold on a long run.

The main problem I experienced coming back through Spain and France with my hands and lower body was down to being wet. So heated gloves and trousers wouldn't have helped. The muffs from Steptoe are weather proof (unlike the BMW winter gloves) and I can wear just thin gloves underneath. I had to turn the heated grips totally off the other night as even level 1 was too warm.

I reckon the gauchos are worth at least two layers of clothes on the bottom half. All I need to do now is to fix the spray coming from the left hand of the rear wheel.

I never knew cabbages had so many uses!
I have noticed that they are good for methane production too :D
