1200 gs - Changing gear oil yesterday and removed the right camchain tensioner instead of the gear oil drain plug :(. I realised my stupidity and put it back (torqued to 32 Nm) - found the correct drain plug and replaced the gear oil.

I did not start the engine until today and when I did it sounds horrendous, an almost terminal clattering from the right hand side. I realise that it's a hydraulic tensioner so gritted my teeth and started it again and left in for a minute, on tickover, but it has not improved - nor got any worse.

I have since re-inspected the tensioner and it consists of the bolt part that screws into the crank-case, the spring and the plunger - should there also be a ball bearing?

If it's not a missing ball bearing, what could I have done?

** Follow up - problem solved:

Just had the rocker cover off and a good nose about and everything around the adjuster looked fine, but it plainly was not full of oil, so thought that I would try running the engine again. Ran on tickover for 2 minutes, still sounded like a can of nails, then gave it a little rev and the noise stopped and it ran as it used to. I guess it needs a little oil pressure to work once it's been emptied?

Phew.

Yeah, wait until the bike goes down on its side.....

When you restart it, you'll know what to do from your recent experience.:D
