Bile had been running rough. Bit of popping when engine braking and occasional backfire. A few day ago I noticed more heat coming off the right side (as you sit on it). Then last night the heat was more noticeable. So ……. Backfires and popping / heat ……….is this a sign of coil pack or cable issues ?

It would be the first place I would look.

Swop the coil packs over and see if the fault, ie Heat follows.
Is it a difficult job for a kack handed person ? Or will I just buy new parts and let my mechanic do it ? The bikes is 18 years old so surely replacing is going to be a good thing ?

No it’s an easy job to pull the stick coil and swop it over to the other side.

If they are the original coils, then one or other could be starting to fail. The earlier ones used to swell up with corrosion. So that might show with a visual check.

Sure you can buy new replacements, they do vary in price. Always worth caring a spare if you travel.

However, If you feel the job is outside your comfort zone then give the bike to your mechanic to sort out.

Thanks Ian. I’ll look at it tomorrow. My daughter lives in Holyhead so regular trips by Stenna mean I can bypass the Brexit clause.
