Looks like the right hand cylinder has failed on the 1200gsa

Anyone ever had this problem.. BMW are looking blankly as though they've never heard of it :spitfire and I've a feeling they're gonna be looking for an excuse not to fix it on warranty... :(

Need to gather info for my tantrum :mcgun

....Why might you think that BuMW have heard of it? It seems you haven't before today, hence your question.

....Why might you think BuMW are looking for an excuse not to fix it?

....What do you mean the RH cylinder has has failed? Fallen off? Stopped working? Seized? Not firing? Making funny noises? Leaking oil?

Seems you are not having much luck, having had to stamp and shout when your K1200S blew up.

As you've not had the bike long, could the previous owner have been aware of a problem before it was sold???, i am probably being cynical, but why did you buy a bike from Germany?, were there not any in the UK?.

Thanks ST That's exactly what I'm after

I've put 2,000 on it so I would imagine if there was a problem that it would have shown up by now :(

Was cheaper to buy it in Germany :thumb

I have heard of it before, and so have BMW

The R/H/S cylinder has damaged the linings and the valves.

BMW are saying lack of lubricant - though oddly enough I had just check the oil level that morning.

Having been through this once before I've experienced BMW attempting to avoiding their warranty issues... and they seem to be heading that way again.

Now, have you anything helpful to add :D

Thank you. At least we have now discovered what your problem with the R/H cylinder is.

When BuMW say lack of lubrication, what do they mean? Is it, as you seem to suspect, that they are implying you run the bike with too little oil or is it that, say, the oil circulation has failed for some unspecified reason?

Keep us up to date for good or bad.

My dealer has heard of this but reckons its normally due to engine running on deck after being dropped?

If it hasnt then its a warranty, if yout Oil levels are correct its bloody hard to prove previous low oil levels.......unless its one of them clever things in the computer of course:D

Thanks for the links to other failures guys... I emailed them to BMW and it appears they're now happy to do the work under warranty...

They say the fault is similar to an engine where the oil level was allowed to run low... but they also found damage in the oil pump so it could have been that too...

It seems to be a chicken and egg situation. Bmw say they found damage in the oil pump that could have been caused by the right hand cylinder letting go... or the oil pump damage could have caused the right hand cylinder fault. There was no pressure on the oil pump so personally I think the problem was a loss of oil pressure though there was no indicator of low pressure when I rode it previously - only when i started it up two day later :nenau

I check the oil regularly and it has been fine in over the 1250 miles that I've had the bike.

The engine only has 2300miles on it so it's not like it's had much opportunity to run low as it was serviced at 800 miles and then in for other checks at 2000 miles.

End result is a new engine is being fitted under warranty...

Jolly good :thumb2....seems your fears vis-a-vis BuMW warranty were all unfounded.

Let us know how long it takes to get all the work done.

Wouldn't say unfounded... comments like 'this looks like you've been riding without oil' and 'might not be covered by warranty' sounded pretty dodgy to me :(

Anyway all's well if it ends well :clap

Up Date...

Picked up the bike today.. with a new engine fitted... it was hammering down with rain and I'm back to running it in for the first 1000 kilometers :blast

By hey.. one BMW had decided to sort the bike out under warrant... the service was second to none...

So looking forward to actually spending sometime on it, rather than standing beside it waiting for BMW Assist
