Right leg under thigh getting cooked

It not a case of letting it idle in the garage i brought the bike from work,30 mile ride at 75 miles an hour. Then put it sin the garage shit the doors and took the pictures which you are looking at. That is why the oil glass is empty and the bike is ticking over. I wear sidi adventure 2 touring boots and the heat was unbearable at times so much i was putting my legs on the pots to keep cool.

OK I went out for a run this morning and the shield does make a difference. It doesn't eliminate the heat on the legs completely, however whereas before it was uncomfortable now barely noticeable.

Had another run this morning with panniers & pillion on board. Didn't even notice the heat, the shield has sorted it as far as i'm concerned. (I don't have any glowing headers).

Why not reduce the amount of heat that the exhaust and cat produce?

Our motorcycles all run at the hottest possible EGT (exhaust gas temp) with a mixture of 14.8:1 (actually lambda=1, since that 14.8 changes with the amount of ethanol in the fuel). On top of that, lambda=1 is the perfect point for the catalytic converter to oxidize (burn) carbon monoxide and any unburned fuel left in the exhaust, meaning the cat temps are even higher than the EGT.

If you use an AF-XIED to richen the mixture 6-7% in addition to getting a smoother, slightly more powerful engine, the EGTs go down and there is little oxygen left in the exhaust which means the cat doesn’t oxidize so much and runs much cooler.

I haven’t measured the temperatures but the lower temps at slightly richer mixtures are well known and supported by the science of how engines work. I’ve run that way on my 2001GS, 2004RT and 2017RT. I’ve run the ‘04RT longest and noticed that before richening the mixture (and lowering the EGT) the headers and cat turned a rusty red shortly after polishing. After adding the LC-1 (like an AF-XIED), the headers and cat never produced the rusty red again (7 years).

Hilltopping might possibly help but that solution still uses stock O2 sensors so I can’t see how it would reduce cruise EGTs or cat functioning and oxidizing.

The remap will change how the ECU responds to O2 sensor signals so should have the same end result as the AFXIED.

I don’t think that’s the case. I haven’t seen a description that says Closed Loop AFR is lower. I believe Hilltop does other things but not a shift of the O2 in Closed Loop.

Update

My bike was collected Friday morning and I have just had a call to say there are no fault codes and the exhaust is working correctly. That was from the local dealer. They say the reply from BMW UK was that it is down to the increased heat in the UK at the moment. Utter UTTER 8ollocks. It was fine in Italy and France in 38 degrees, no heat issues at all. My legs were burning at 1am in the morning, not even 20 degrees. These bike are designed to cross deserts aren't they?? :nenau

Maybe yours is designed to get you climatised to the desert heat, dealer is talking cobblers, over 40 here in the heatwave the other week, never had that problem you have.

Bmw are removing my catalyst and exhaust today to check if there are any blockages!!!!!! They asked why ive not reported it before, The bikes 14months old and done its second trip. Last year the bike was really Hot and so was the air temp, and there was another gsa on the trip and he said is bike was very hot and is wife complained as much as mine did........ So i put it down to it being the normal bmw thing. But after being away with 2 other gsa lc 17 and 18 plates and there bikes ran so much cooler than mine. We swapped bikes and the difference was unbelievable. There headers are blue from the cyclinders to just on to the bends on each side of the bike. My headers are blue all the way to the catalytic converter then again afterwards all the way to the silencer. The rear number plate is bent out of shape due to the heat coming out of the exhaust. My wife found the last trip unbearable, and so did i at times.

I think that all bike's headers would glow red hot if engine is allowed to run (in the dark) for just a few minutes with no airflow. This is why one should always ride off soon after the bike is started.

Hmmmmm - yes defo needs BMW to check the whole bike over, let us know what the root cause turns out to be.

We should all go out and do nighttime rides at speed at night with a mate and report back :)
