Dear All (and Steptoe if your available),

I'm considering buying a high mileage 2003 1150GS Adventure. Current owner appears to have racked up the miles commuting from Frome to Southampton every day (50 each way I think) - 2000 miles/month. Currently nearly 63,000 but look very clean in the photos (Full lugguage incl.). Owner has changed all the oils recently but suspect may not have had a 60,000 dealer service. What's the risk, what's it worth (ad for under £4K) and could it be due for any big bills soon? Planning to look at it this morning (tbc). I'm prepared to do some basic servicing myself and go to some one like Steptoe (sorry, don't have his full name) for more complex/tech stuff.

Thanks for any advice

60.000 only just run in, get it and put another 60.000 on it, they ain't jap crap, people buy these bikes to do miles on and my GS has now done 72,000 all going well.

63K....just run in.:D My 1150 has clocked up 61K recently and is running as good as ever,as are any number of "high mileage" BMs.The technology is comparable to cars and they last very well if serviced regularly.I tend to "road test" the owner as well as the bike when i go to view.Is the owner someone with a brain who understands these things or just an idiot who has abused the bike.
Apart from the usual checks you would do and the corrosion issues, the 1150 is a good solid buy.Any bike may have issues but you have to take that chance or go to a dealer to get a warranty.Caveat emptor etc.
I wouln't worry too much about it not having had a dealer service as they are easy to do yourself and you can save a fortune.Ask him if its been used off-road,if the clutch has been replaced, when the fluids were last replaced and check for any rear wheel play.

Personally I would not worry about high mileage if it has a FSH. Either Main dealer or known specialist.

My 1100 currently on 96 thousand, its had a clutch and a hall sensor, and a battery and some tyres, oil and fuel, I suppose its down to how the previous owner rode and looked after the bike, if the price is right and the bike seems cared for then I would go for it.

Lets all rember ajust the price if the miles are high thats how it works high miles low price,

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Bike had been previously given first refusal to some one in Holland. Seller agreed to contact me if it was not followed though. Got a call Saturday, agreed price if I found it OK, about to drive down this morning when guy in Holland got back to him with the original higher price. Obviously this was not to be. Still looking

Thanks again,

Even more remarkable is that he's only on his second clutch...AND ORIGINAL DISCS???????? wow.

400,000 miles...

the motor, is as it came from the factory, I have had to replace head gaskets, and back in Feb on a trip to Panama I had a plastic chain guide brake so I've replace then all. The valves, springs, seals, bearing etc. are original to the motor.
The trans I did replace all the bearings some time ago I'm thinking around the 200k mark. The clutch was replaced at that time since I was "there" so I'm one my second clutch.
Still have the original fuel pump. Two final drive bears, the last one when out around 300k miles. Pivot bearings at the final drive go bad around 40 or 50 miles. Hall sensors about every two or three years. I still have the original brake rotors but they will have to be replaced soon as they are getting thin. I lost count of tire years ago.
Not much much has gone bad on this bike, I'm hope it takes me to South America sometime next year....

Amazing.

I sold a R series Boxer a few years ago which had 225k on it and was still going strong.

I also had a K series which had over 170k and was running sweet as a nut when I stupidly sold it.

My current 1150GS has almost 90k on it.

Beemers are very capable of huge mileages,60k is absolutely nothing to one.

I got mine for nearly nothing because the guy that sold me it was used to Jap bikes and thought 80k was the bike almost done when he didnt realise that was low mileage for a BMW.
