One of the riv nuts in the rear sub frame has lost its thread AND its spinning around loosely, Its going to be a right bugger just to get anything inside the frame to hold the riv nut, but even if I could hold it the threads inside are fubar so the bolt wont come out, any ideas ?

I had the same thing when I was fitting my SW-Motech frames. As my bike was under warranty Vines replaced the sub frame.Mind you I had to argue that the riv nut wasn`t fitted properly. When I was looking to fix mine I contemplated cutting a hole above the nut and getting at it that way, welding it back afterwards but it still means taking out the sub frame.

riv nut

Its fiddly but using a dremel cut through the inside near the outer lip so it falls in ,
i have poked a bit of wire through so when its cut loose it can be coated with araldite or similar with a cocktail stick so it sticks when it falls in and doesnt rattle,
i have a riv nut gun and not far from you ,,,,,,roamer

riv nut

sorry mate long day didnt read thread properly,
if you have room drill down the middle of the bolt into the riv nut increasing drill size starting at 3mm ish until bolt breaks off
then follow previous post, done a few but tricky, good luck

Knock out the riv nut with a punch, or dremel off and blow debris away.

Fill tube through resulting hole with chemical metal.

Drill it, Tap it, bolt it up :thumb

I would suggest being very careful if wacking it with a punch, the metal is very thin box section and will bend or kink.

Stick a claw hammer under the head of the bolt and pull the whole affair out, then chemical metal if needed and fit a new one.

Can you show the exact location and awkwardness to reach because otherwise

It's a 5-minute job to fit a new Rivnut. I'd try very hard to remove the old one without damaging anything else or making the hole bigger.

rivnut !

Just had the same prob on my guzzi swing arm mudguard fixings. Silverline do a rivnut gun along with new nuts complete in the package.about £30.00. drill out , insert new nut , one squeeze with the gun and done . Simples. You are left with a bit of debris left in the box section but a nice new secure fix. !good luck

Cheers guys,
All great answers and ideas. I decided to go very gently and grind, file and hacksaw off the bolt as low as I could get it. The rest of the rivnut fell off and I was able to get it out....I loved the claw hammer idea...brutal but quick...Anyhoo here's a few pics because we all love pics...Also fitting a new sub frame to a bike because of a knackered thread just shows that the "new mechanics and engineers" philosophy is to replace instead of repair and using your head...
This is the location of said problem..

This is the rear rack support on the rear subframe, as you can see the left rivnut is perfect while the right one has no thread

Here is the left one all intact..

Here is the right one with the thread at the bottom missing

This is what I needed out of the rear subframe
12apr12007.jpg

All ready to receive a new rivnut, with no damage to the box section walls

This is the rivnut in two pieces, as you can see the top collar has broken away from the main body,

So now all I have to do is get the correct rivnut that fits inside the diameter of the hole, ( any ideas )

Once again thank you all that have helped me with ideas and experiences, I must admit it has been fun taking it all apart and fixing it properly...Tosh

To Johnny,
Thanks for the link, even though I like to have tools for every occasion I think your idea works for me...I will as always let everyone know the results once I have the correct rivnut size....Tosh

And finally to Roamer,
That is a true sign of a gentleman, I wish to thankyou for the offer of the tool, If the homemade one doesn't work then I will be taking you up on the very very kind offer....Tosh
