Riv nut knackered, any ideas?

Certainly did Tosh - stainless, so it won't rust like that fjr linky one.

Well it was under warranty plus unlike yours this riv nut is in the box section looking upwards under the bike that the pannier frame bolts to.I wonder how many other people have had a problem with these nuts.

I must admit taking off all the plastics takes some time but with the help on here it isn't a hard job to do at all..
The rivnuts are made from mild steel or aluminum ( of those that I have seen) so I would think the thread wouldn't take much more than 20 Nm to strip..
But hey...what do I know,
It looks like it was in a difficult location for the bmw boys, There is no way I would buy a new sub frame just for one of the rivnuts,,

I am pleased you used a little patience and got it out,
sadly dealer bonus systems/ proftit margins have a lot to do with their inability to to this sort these things out,
when i offered the riv nut gun i forgot to add i have lots of rivnuts , they are pennies if bought in bulk, so you can have one,
you can also fit it by putting a nut and washer on a long bolt then screwing right through the rivnut ,then run the nut and washer up to the rivnut and put into the hole, holding the bolt head with a spanner wind the nut onto the rivnut until it bites into the hole, do not turn the bolt as it will damage the threads, the gun is handy for awkward places but not essential,

In fact i am going to bikesafe at the humber bridge in about half an hour,,

Ahh bless ya, I had ordered a packet of 25 on thursday and on friday morning they came through the post box...£2.50 inc post....
As for the bike safe, are you instructing or training, The reason I ask is comming from linc's to hull for a bike safe when Im sure that linc's has a great reputation of advanced training and bike safe stuff...

So after my sunday dinner I settled down to do the job in hand..
Using a nut on the thread with a non friction washer worked a treat.
I had to use a flat blade screwdriver to stop the rivnut from spinning as you turn the nut..

Once I had the jaws of the rivnut grabbing onto the side walls of the tube frame then It was a case of turning the nut slowly...

I stopped to check that the horizontal crush lines were still present, That way I havent gone too far and distorted the thread body..
A couple more turns and the horizontal lines have nearly dissapeared...

I am happy with the install and it looks just like the OEM one..

So it was just a case of putting it all back together again....

So thanks to all the guys that helped me with this little problem...All fixed and looking as good as new...So once again Thankyou....Tosh
