Road crap thrown up from rear wheel

The 1200GS is a great bike (& so it should be for the price), but the biggest disappointment to me has been the lack of protection from road muck thrown up from the rear wheel.

I've ordered a hugger but there is over a month's waiting list for them, not surprising in view of the severity of the problem.

In the meantime I've made a flap out of rubber belting and fastened it to the plastic compartment where the tool tray goes. This hangs down between the shock and the rear wheel and protects the battery and the area behind the engine.

However, I find the back of my left leg is still covered in sh*** after a ride in our winter weather. It's OK to be able to hose yourself down when you get home, but imagine touring on it and having to walk into hotels after getting covered in crap!

I was wondering if anyone who has already got a hugger could tell me if this cures the problem, or does it need the side panels from Touratech to fill in the gap under the seat?

Really BMW, should we really have to be doing this on a bike that costs £9400?

Just do a search for "HUGGER" there are plenty of threads on the issue mate

Hi B

I went through those threads before I ordered the hugger, but don't recall anyone reporting back one way or the other how well they worked.

Could that possibly be because like myself they're all waiting for delivery to actually happen?

Colin ..I ordered a hugger in September and I have been assured it is being dispatched next week! I hope so and I hope it works because I ride my bike into London every week day and already my Left Boot is getting plastered with crap from the shity roads and I cant think what it will be like when the Gritters start spraying salt and sand all over the place.
Hear-by lies a dilemma, We have all been saying that we wanted the 1150gs to be more like the off road bike that we think it should be, i.e. lighter more striped down, looking more like a big enduro, when BMW give us this with the 1200 we then think we really wanted a touring bike and start ordering additional body work to bolt on etc!
Like you I will be interested to see how the hugger works, in anticipation I have already removed the rear mudguard attachment and can say that it has made no difference , apart from maybe throwing some spray onto following cars !!!!

Mark, I think that mudguard would have been a lot more useful if it was rotated forward to cover the front part of the wheel ....

Brilliant hugger

I received my carbon/ metal hugger from Motorrad Thingys (Dutch's outfit, used to be BMW Haggis or something) a couple of weeks ago. This is not bullsh1t and I've no axe to grind BUT this is quite the best quality bit of kit I think I've ever seen for bikes. It is long enough front and back to work at keeping the crap off you and largely off the bike, but the way the aluminium (or whatever it is) arm is bonded to the hugger and the perfect fit and look of the thing is what blew me away.
I've had something like 15 huggers in the past for different bikes and this is simply the best.
The ally arm is moulded to look exactly like it is an OE part and I'm chuffed to the danglies with it.
Whatever it cost (can't remember now) it is worth twice.
Just my tuppence.

2 more dirty weeks to go!

Thanks for that Pete, that's the one I've ordered, it's reassuring to know that it does the job.

With luck I should have it beginning of December.

HUgger supplier

Can you provide detail on this suplier and the cost please. I guess by now you have experience of the effectiveness of this hugger too?

Thanks

Eddy

If I read Plankton Pete's post correctly it seems it does the job. When mine arrives I'll let you know.
