My youngest son has recently passed the CBT and searching for a road legal good 4-stroke 125cc enduro / trail bike which he can ride on and off road (green lanes, byways, boats etc) until he goes for the DAS next summer.

He wants to gain all round experience and get time on a reliable bike and because he is big (6’5” and around 100kgs) he doesn’t want to look like he’s riding a monkey bike lol.

Ideally, the bike would have a combi start (electric and kick), age of the bike isn’t too important but a reliable, low mileage bike which has been looked after and not shagged to an inch of its life.

Do you have a bike which fits the above criteria or can you recommend a suitable bike?

Cheers and thanks in advance for your input and advice.

I am racking my brain and can’t think of a bike that fits the criteria. Might have to drop the leccy start to open up some options. I am thinking older stuff such as Honda XL125R.

I was thinking of an XL too and XT, XR, TTR, CRF plus I’ve been looking at old KTMs and Husky!

Most if not all new/er bikes only have leccy start and older bikes only kick.
Personally, I like and prefer bikes with combi start which has the best of both worlds….. It’s good to have kick start if a battery or leccy start fails and it’s good to have leccy start when out on trails, come off several times and absolutely knackered without any strength and energy to kick start a moped.

I know to find a suitable bike which hasn’t been thrashed, trashed and regularly serviced will be like finding a needle in a haystack!

Show me a 125 trail bike with electric and kick start. Not sure it exists

They do but they’re old now. Very old in 4T.
Plenty of 2T KTM’s about but expect to pay the premium for one as everyone knows they are getting rarer since they went to the 150cc engine

Yup, much like me! 😂

When I began riding, I was put on an old Suzi which no other learner could ride because the gears all went one direction but I can't remember if thy was all up or all down!
🤔🙄🫣

That's interesting.... What bike is that and is it road legal?
Is / where the registration plate?
Yes it's road legal. It's a Sherco TY125 with long range tank and seat fitted. That photo is not my bike but is the same as mine. We have a number plate bracket and number plate fitted. It also has indicators.

Just an FYI , there are other options.
There’s a raft of 250 2T’s registered as 125’s.
However the 4T are a much rarer thing.
I do know where there is one that will happily move someone of his stature

I don't know if you'd find one, but I started on a Honda CLR 125 City Fly.

It was fairly tall so it fitted my gangly body and I did a few local trails on it.

It was an electric start only though. Rear cush drives were a bugger to replace as they were in blind holes though.

I have seen a couple of 250s Reg as 125 and although this would suit his weight and stature far better, I'm mindful that I / it may drop him in the proverbial!

Thanks for the heads up.... I'm out of touch now.... I never knew about the CLR.
It would suit my son's build better and it's a model to take in to consideration.

Yes and no.
Technically as long as the P2W ratio in the logbook is correct then there are no issues.
Plus, if the paperwork has been correctly processed with DVLA then there is no comeback.
Especially if you have purchased it already converted.
They do carry a premium for obvious reasons.
There are loads of 2T done but no 4T that I know of other than ours which I sorted myself with DVLA for our teenager.

I had a Rieju 125 when I first started out biking in 2002, it was plenty tall enough for me and handled my 18 stone weight quite happily although my conservative riding style probably didn't test it's limits. It had a kick as well as an electric starter for it's air-cooled Yamaha engine but it looks like the kick start is not available on the LC version. The one thing that was a bit worrying was although it had a battery if the engine wasn't running the lights went off, not good if being a learner and you stalled at a junction in the unlit country roads around here, easily solved though by tapping into the stop light switch feed.

AJP 125 Enduro is another option if you can find one.
