Road Smarts

Just fitted a pair of road smarts on my 1200 gs after using the ever faithful Tourances - felt like a change.
Quick question ( may be a silly one , but hey may as well ask) do the pressures remain the standard BMW settings or do they alter as the tyre is a different type (ie road bias).
Have asked at 'WHEELHOUSE TYRES" Birmingham who are a Dunlop dealer , but the guy was a complete tit as he said you did not buy them from me so find out yourself (twat!!) So here i am at the information centre !!

Did i mention 'WHEELHOSE TRYRES' Birmingham - oh yes i did .Still a cock.

The Dunlop website will tell you their recommendation, 2.2/2.5 bar I think irrespective of load which would be 36/42 plus change in psi. I ran mine this high for a few k miles but the rear seemed to be wearing quite quickly in the centre tread. I have now dropped them to 34/38 one up and 36/42 two up or luggage. Seems to be getting better mileage but thats maybe just my impression.

Had the Road smarts fitted last weekend after picking up a nail in my rear tyre in the originals... Never go off road so whats the point in having a tyre thats designed to cope with it

Nearly got them scrubbed in now.. Its harder to get to the edges because they have a much rounder profile than the dual sport tyres... So far tip top though.. Will have to get our lass on the back.. That'll get rid of the chicken strips

Not cos she adds any weight of course Because she digs me in the ribs and wails for me to go faster

Hmmmm my memory is not what it was. Dunlop say 2.5/2.9 bar so that would be 36/42 plus change.

For what its worth,good on off road tyres will get you more miles for your pouds as they come with more tread depth from new,you dont have to be brave an go off the black stuff to own them

You'll need a hell of a lot of tread to out-last Mich Pilots, they are worth nearly double the milage of something like tourances in my experience

Regading the mileage you can get from Roadsmarts:
I had my Roadsmarts fitted just before the summer last year. With my wife we did around 7,000 kms two up (nearly 1,500 kms were on the highway mostly in Germany at 160 to 180 km/h speeds eating the rubber like crazy) and the rest just me alone up to 10,000 kms total as of today. There's still about 1mm of tread to go before I hit the wear indicator.

So rudy t we can say there good for 7000 miles in europe but in the uk we have shite road surfaces so think theyl wair a lot faster,but time will tell

Great for the road only,but my michelin anakee 2s will easily get 7000 from the rear alone and it gets some abuse in every way ,each to their own on black rings,we all ride in different ways an all have so many views on rubber,so there will always be conflicts on

Before i had my 1200 i rode a KTM 990 sm and had fitted a pair of Michelin 2cts
they lasted 1600 miles , not good -but fun , the tyre fitted before that was a Pirelli Scorpion which lasted 3000 miles on a Spanish Pryanesse Trip , great tyre.
Lets hope the Roadsmarts last as long as the Tourances (4500 miles) if not longer.

I've done around 2,500 on my R-Smarts,up into the Scottish highlands and down into the East Anglian flatlands,scratching 'round unfamiliar roads. Excellent tyres,warm up quickly,plenty of grip in the wet,which inspires confidence and allows you to get on with thrashing the tits off the bike,an '09 12GS originally fitted with Tourance EXP's.
I contacted Dunlop re. pressures and they said stick with factory recommended settings.
As for longevity,who gives a toss? I'd rather do 5k miles on great tyres than 20k miles on shite ones.

When peeps harp on upon mileages in here I alway have vision of a couple of old duffers in wax cotton, pipes and slippers arguing the merits of the mileage returned on a Avon Safety Mileage compared to one of those new fangled Dunlop TT100's

It has to be said that comparing Roadsmarts to any big trailee tyre is somehow misleading as some already hinted here.

We are talking about pure road going tyre and as such Roadsmarts offer a level of grip in wet and dry conditions that can be compared to a pure sport tyres used on gixers & co. just couple years ago but with much better mileage.

GS is a heavy bike so the Roadsmarts will wear fast if you ride just straight regardless of dual compound material used. In such case harder and/or deeper tread trailee tyre is definitely a better fit even if you never go off-road.
Riding alone I would get much more that 7000 miles from my Roadsmarts even on Czech B-roads with number of potholes I never seen in UK. I cannot say how it looks after last winter in UK but here we had -20C freezing regularly and a lot of snow so the roads are damaged to the extent I've never seen before.

A side note:
Many guys ... and gals would make their life much easier once they put aside the looks factor of the tyre mounted on big trailee bike like GS. My GS fitted with spoked wheels is a road going bike with only off-road aspirations as far as the next gravel road goes.

I never heard of anyone that would fit the car with off-road tyres just to be able ride gravel roads time to time yet there are many of GS riders that fit trailee tyres just to be able do that type of "off-roading" 0.5% of the time.

Good point. As for the vertically challenged wannabee GS riders looking for lower seats/shocks/ESA or boots with a 3" insert/heel, some people want image, no matter what nature throws their way ...

So when will BMW offer a GSA with an ESA setting of "MIDGE7" which drops the bike by 5" for those with a 28" inseam? Wait for the new 2013 model !

To get back to the original post: my RoadSmarts have got 2,000m on them now. Much more fun and predictable than Tourances!
