I don't know if it's a countrywide practice, but in Central Scotland the method of resurfacing most of the minor roads (and some of the not so minor ones) involves spraying a thin layer of tar over the existing road and then covering it with loose chips. I was out the other day and noticed a few roads have had this treatment, this is just a heads up if you're out and about. It's not funny if you encounter this approaching a bend at speed. 
I had major issues with the chippings puncturing my PR4 tyres last year (two in three weekends). This year the chippings have chipped the paint on my swinging arm in front of the tyre
