Road tyres

Already ordered a pair of Roadsmarts from a local dealer getting them fitted on Monday. Looking forward to trying out....

I originally had battle wings on as standard which I had no problems with in the wet or dry

I then switched to TCK's for a trip over to Morocco

And now ive just ordered a set of Dunlop Roadsmarts seen as the reviews are raving about them as im off around Europe this summer... Cheapest I could find a set of Roadsmarts was from oponeo.co.uk for £200 incl delivery.

I wont be having them fitted for a month or 2 though as I have some life left on TCK's

RoadSmart vs PR3

IME, the RS rear was done in after 4K (wear level marker low), the PR3 with more and heavier loads is still ok, square but ok, after 5.5K. Looking like the normal 8Kish for my setup and style.

YMMV.

Re : Roadsmarts, just asked Motorrad Glasgow to supply and fit a pair on my 1200GS, said they could not / would not as they were not 'official' tyres recommended by BMW. Has anyone else had this response?????

What a bunch of W**kers!

Mine where dealer fitted.....

Can you get the front PR3 as well, or are you running a combo?

Be very interested in PR3's if life expectancy is that much better, assuming handling is on-par with the Roadsmart as I would not want to sacrifice (significant) performance for life.

PR1 Front - PR3 rear

Remember the PR3 is a PR2 with a new tread cut and a price hike! - I had it fitted as I expected torrential downpours last month and was keen to try one, seems I was mistaken

Rumours abound regarding a PR3 front, but nothing confirmed yet. Got all my fingers and toes crossed, I did toy with the idea of going to Michelin's factory was I was in the area a couple of weeks ago, but was too cream-crackered.

IMHO Michelins are better as the compound is softer than the RS (Dunlop in general), but everyone's got their own tyre taste. I know people love 'em, they do work well but it took around 300 miles until I was happy to throw the bike around, and they are nice, just not as good as Michelin as an all year round tyre nor as stable once into three figures as the Michelins.

As for getting hold a of PR1 all the major tyre fitters in London throw a hissy fit [1] when you ask for a PR1 front for a GS.

My very friendly tyre fitter has kept my half used RS front so I can refit in the future, one diamond geezer. :thumb

[1] to the point of hanging up on you. As I know you can get them, but the lazy buggers won't phone the distributor to order them. Then they start all this: its a GS, you really want some Trailie tyres, because they 'look good'. fcuking twonk.

I didn't know (until today, when I bought some) that there's a newer version of the EXP (M?) that is still more road-biased than the old-style Tourance but has a compound that tries to address the grumblings about poorer mileage in comparison to the old-style Tourance. Only 35 miles under my belt today but they'll be scrubbed off tomorrow.

Tourance EXP "H" is the new harder compound, its fitment is really for the XLV1000 Varadero, a much heavier bike i think.

Try mynetmoto, by size and i think there are 4 types listed, including M (BMW?), and H (Honda?).

My Bridgestone Battlewings on my 2010 GS have had it!! IMHO they were worse than the original Tourances fitted to my 2004 GS. I've read some great things about the Roadsmarts and went to my BMW dealer (Bristol Motorrad) who are fitting a pair for me next weekend. I can't wait. With such a recession going on, you'd think dealers would bend over backwards to get the custom. It's not like these tyres have had a bad press for Christ's sake.:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah

Just fitted BT020 to front and 021 on rear, headed straight out into p##sing wet trip on twisty roads to Mull of Kintyre, tyres were amazing, after 3 hrs in the wet the chicken strips were down to about 5mm and totally gone once it dried out.... Some really heavy braking too coming into tight, wet bends, total confidence in the BT's.
BMW would not fit them......who cares!!!!
Looking forward to getting BT023's later in the year.

Is there any experience with the quite new Metzeler Z8 already?

The bike came new with Anakee's, and I hated them. I changed Z6 and am very pleased with them. They give me confidence, stability and good milage. However, I do not considder myself as a particularily experienced or sophisticated rider.

When the Z6 wear out and are possibly not available any longer, I would like to get tyres that do what the Z6 did for me.

pilot road3 available august

Well done for recommendations of semi road use tyres there guys !:blast:blast:blast

I'm a road only rider on my 1200GS, so have researched the options.

I wanted my favourite Michellin Pilot Road 2... but they don't do a front in out size.. You have to mix a rear Pilot Road 2 with a front Pilot Road....

...

Just thought Id inform you Pilot road 3's available in august for the gs. I cant wiat to get some as I have had pr2's on previous 1100s and they were fantastic tyres.:thumb
