Rock Oil Guardian 20w50

If you've got a Sainsburys close by have a pop in , Castrol 20/50 was on special last week ....... :bounce1

Or Morrisons , they have their own brand for £4.99 :eek

I know someone who uses it and has almost 100,000 miles on the clock and its a 1200 ...... :rob

Brand loyalty i can understand - its this having to hunt for 20w50 mineral - which as you have seen isn't ubiquitous - that I don't. i thought that was a joke.

but.. at least you can now join the rest of us in the 21st century with this new 'semi' formulation. :D

Though i have popcorn to hand for as and when the luddites notice this change.

I can see it now....

"semi in a BOXER? - thats an outrage" :rob

I really don't know what you're rattling on about. He's not 'having to hunt for a 20w50 mineral'; he never mentioned mineral oil. Rock Oil Guardian is a semi-synthetic!!

I think it is classed as a motorcycle oil because of its JASO classification making it suitable for wet clutches, this is not normally used in cars.

Ah.. i didn't know that having never seen rock oil on sale - anywhere that I shop,. And I'm pretty sure I've never seen a 20w/50 semi - not in recent years.

but that still begs the question - why must it be 20w/50?

i dont get that at all. It seems really odd - with the wealth of Engine oil - for cars, available in a store like Halfords - walking out empty handed because they dont sell - what is nowadays too obscure. seems daft.

the fact that a major retailer like Halfords only stock an 'Economy' 20w/50 speaks volumes. Nobody wants it!! (aside from veteran car owners - probably)

the more i consider this the odder it seems. 20w/50???

20w/50 is a good grade of oil for large air cooled engines, not only BMW, but Harley Davidson and some Moto Guzzi use it. 10/40 oil is too thin for these hot running motors, but fine in liquid cooled.
There are plenty of high spec 20w/50 engine oils about (Mobil, Amsoil, harley davidson, rock oil etc) you just need to know where to look.

Bmw book says SAE 15-40 is ok for temperatures up to 30 degrees Celcius. It rarely gets that hot over here so would suit most people. Castrol and other big names supply it and it is readily available at most car shops.

The man from Castrol says that 10w-40 is fine for all ambient temperatures up to 40 degrees Celcius 9(SEE 1200 OIL STICKY ) yet BMW's temp range says 25 C I am tempted to say I agree with Castrol! It's almost impossible to get 20w-50 here in France but 10w-40 and 15w-40 are the norm:eek Now the ave temp is about 10C higher here so why use such a heavy oil in the UK? As to 10w-40 being too thin eh surely you want an oil that is thin to get round the engine quickly at the lower temps in the UK?? I don't think I am an expert in oil tech but surely in the UK you need a slightly lighter oil for the cooler climate:confused: Also BMW motorcyles don't really need motorcycle oils as the engine is more like a car engine and revs barely higher so any standard semi synth 10w-40 motor oil should be good enough surely??
