My bike is 3 years old and has developed corrosion in a couple of places.
I took it in to Bahnstormer near Alton yesterday, they asked BMW for an ex gratia payment and within 10 minutes got an offer of 50% of the cost of a replacement cover. Very good, I thought.
Cheers, Michael :)

Aye, wait until you get the labour cost to fit it

Rub down and slap a bit of silver hammerite on it :thumb2

I have often wondered how many more corrosion problems there might be if so many owners didn't replace OE equipment with Touratech and Wunderlich replacements???? :nenau

I've kept mine pretty standard, and apart from a replaced crash bars under warranty, it's pretty much mint despite the miles I do on tours...but then mine is regularly tucked up for winter, and I'm sure it would be a different story if it wasn't!!

Had both rocker covers replaced during service ( at Vines) , parts supplied by BMW at 100% cost.Bike is over 3 years old. I didnt have corrosion , it was like spider web like cracks on the paint. Same issue on a different bike but on the final drive ( which was replaced on the warranty ).

My front engine cover went as well just outside warranty........with the bike immaculate, low mileage and laid up in a dry garage as I couldn't ride:

After quite a lot of correspondence with BMW Customer Services (Bristol Motorrad not very helpful!) I got full cost of the cover and 50% labour - frankly nobody should be paying for the replacement of this substandard, shoddily finished item that is not fit for purpose! And after all these years BMW have not revised the design or improved the paint coating :blast

Have a look here for photos of other bits to keep an eye on!

are you sure your not washing it in sea water

I must admit after EVERY ride out when the bike has got wet in rain or spray then it always gets hosed down and some anti corrosion type spray gets directed around the seams of that black cover.

Hopefully that will reduce any chances of corrosion.

I did and most of those photos are just neglect - pure and simple. It's an absolute disgrace to allow a bike - any bike - to get into that sort of condition. :rob :D

:agree

My 4 year old's done 43k and looks almost new.

Any idea what miles the rust-monster has done... or how long it was parked below high-tide?

:thumb

Just off to spray me nuts.....:)

Something odd about that much corrosion. Doesn't look right on a 'pampered' bike. The 'fur' on the alternator etc cannot suddenly have appeared, surely?

My 30000 mile 06 GSA, garaged but not (I must admit) washed that often - except in the winter when I jet wash it each time after use - is nothing like that. No ACF or anything similar used on mine either.

LOL you might think so looking at that engine cover - in actual fact, always rinsed if it gets road salt on it, washed very regularly using Autoglym cleaner and bike shampoo and regular spray down with FS365 and ACF 50 here and there for good measure.

I agree with regards 'neglect' although maybe that's a bit strong but why didn't the BMW Dealer treat any of those nasties before they progressed so far? My point really is that you DO need to keep on top of cleaning/maintaining the GS or it will go down hill pretty quick!
Oh.......and I had nothing to do with it's state/condition ;)

2 years old, 20,000miles

It is pampered, judge for yourself (photo below:-) - odd maybe but it happened. Where the corrosion starts (the edges of those rectangularish recesses) is untreated metal and the sound insulation 'pad' that sits in the plastic cover holds damp against those parts, corrosion starts and quickly spreads under the paint.

....and if you want to have a really close look :-)
BIG photo!

Well here we go again, my replacement front engine cover is corroding after only 7 months since fitting and just 3135 miles (I was off the road again for 8 weeks after more surgery on my leg)

Won't be long before it's visible with the black plastic cover in place :(

I'm kicking myself as I intended to remove the black plastic cover months ago and waxoil the vulnerable unfinished metal surfaces (....strange that the righthand side hasn't started to corrode yet) to stop this happening again but never got round to it.

I washed the rubber sound deadening pad (or whatever it is?!) and was surprised how porous it is, not quite like a sponge but it does soak up and hold a fair amount of water!

So, untreated poor quality aluminium + contact with soggy 'sponge' = corrosion............no surprise there so why no modification by BMW to these design flawed parts?!

I guess the replacement engine cover has a 12 month warranty so I'll take the photos in to Bristol Motorrad and see what they have to say!

As and when I get a replacement I WILL treat the unfinished ally with waxoil.......as the rubber doofer is porous I might see if I can soak it in ACF50 for good measure! :-)

And there's the nub of the problem. Junk the sponge Andy. It makes no difference to mechanical noise from the engine; just sits there basking in damp and humidity rotting everything around it.

My dealer junked mine when they replaced my cover under warranty and say that they now do it as part of their PDI on new R1200's.
I'm not saying it won't happen without the sponge as clearly people are still having problems even when they have ditched the sponge, but, 15k miles on and my replacement cover is fine :thumb2

Andy...

appologies 4 straying off topic but noticed you have ohlins fitted..

looking at doing the same how dya find it, worth the money?

Why not just rub down the corroded area, treat and paint with some silver hammerite? Will only take a few minutes to do and save you the hassle of going into BMW
I had to do the same thing on an 1150 front cover and problem solved.

I'm worried about my new GS12 reading this!!

Having just got my brand new GS back from the dealer and seeing this rust, I'm a bit concerned that mine will go this way. Someone mentions the pad has been removed on 08 version? Can anybody confirm this?
Can the cover easily be removed to prevent rust by using silver hammerite as suggested? I mit even dab a bit in the hex bolts to stop them going the same way or copper grease at least.

Well the good news is that Bristol Motorrad have agreed to replace the engine cover again as the replacement part fitted is covered by warranty (a 2 year warranty because I paid part of the cost - the new replacement will only inherit the balance of the warranty remaining ).
I'm going to leave it a while until either the corrosion creeps past the black plastic cover or my next oil change is due.....might as well get full benefit of the oil change they'll have to do :-)

I'll go with your advice, I've read before of people binning the sodding (sodden:-) thing! Is it actually there for sound deadening or some other purpose....anyone know for sure?

An idea but the corrosion is close to the point of being visible outside the plastic cover so if the paint job failed and the warranty period had also run out I'd be hacked off.........and anyway the hassle will be offset by a free oil change :-)
Also I'm not sure how effective Hammerite (or any paint) would be, Aluminium requires a special undercoat/primer for paint to take properly?
When I get the new one I'll waxoil the whole area covered by the plastic cover straight away.

Interesting point, I wonder if there have been any changes for the 2008 model? The cover is easy to remove, 5 Torx screws, 2 minute job........post a photo of your engine cover please.
Hammerite/paint - see my comments above.
Waxoil and/or ACF50 ;-)

Personally I didn't find there was a huge difference between the Ohlins and OE shocks but I swapped them at a low mileage when the OE units were still A1 (the Ohlins' were bargain 2nd hand items [used for less than 1000 miles] and came up at a time when I felt I needed a treat :-)). However I would say they are noticably better especially over rough road surfaces (result of better damping?). I've read plenty of 'reviews' by guys who've fitted Ohlins where they rant and rave about the big improvement - my somewhat reserved opinion could well be due to the fact that I fitted them at a time when I had been unable to ride the bike for a long time so no back to back comparison as such. I certainly have no complaints :-)

If you need to replace your suspension Ohlins will most likely be cheaper than new BMW shocks! There are other brands of shock that 1200GS riders go for, Wibers and WP are popular (search the forum:-). Watch eBay;-)

Hammerite won't stick properly to Aluminium or zinc plated parts, but they have an excellent special metals primer to use in these cases. Recent thread on this subject as well if you do a search:thumb
