simple really the old covers used have magnesium written on them,my 2010 doesnt say that.the reason for asking as i want to powder coat them black but triple s wont touch them if they are magnesium saying that the chemical sripper they use reacts with the metal:nenau

i thought it might be:blast, anyway its amazing how many 1150 owners/1200 wannabe owners reply to threads on this section innit:D:D

Rocker covers

Hello I have had my covers powder coated twice :eek:so chemically stripped twice and no problems.

ffs have they,if like the earlier ones it had,do you think i would ask?

Correct me if i'm wrong (what the fcuk have i said) if they were made of magnesium they would have exploded as soon as they came into contact with a moisture rich atmosphere
Magnesium alloy i think is a more correct way putting it...but that too long a line to imprint.....bomb doors opening:eek:

You may be thinking of the wrong metal there...Magnesium burns like buggery only if you set fire to it.

Vaguely remembering my schoolboy chemistry :toungincheek

Magnesium (and Aluminium as it happens) both have rapid oxidisation in air and the (thin) oxide coating is very strong resulting in a coating that needs a lot of heat to ignite the internal metal, however once you get the internal metal burning it will really go for it.

If you want to see how fast the oxide layer forms, scratch some aluminium with a knife and watch the shiny scratch change back to dull grey.

Why don't they blast them then?

Ask how they do wheels as they're all mag alloy now. Failing that, get a tin of paint and do them your self.

I'm getting some stuff powder coated next week, so I'll ask if I remember:thumb2

thanks vern ,they just said they use a chemical stripper that reacts with the magnesium.i know triple s have a good rep so thought it would not be a problem.
