How necessary is this adjustment, i.e. what will happen if I dont do it? I see loads of threads on valve adjustment/clearance but they never mention this. The only person I've seen mentioning this is Steptoe.

I check mine evey time I service it,and I think I've only adjusted it about half a dozen times.

If you don't adjust it when the gap gets too big,the movement will just get bigger and bigger I suppose, and the pushrods won't line up properly, and they'll wear more and more, and push to one side, and then it'll throw a rod on the motorway, all the oil will come out,and the 40 tone truck behind you will skid on the oil, crash into a coach load of children and burst into flames, taking out the other carrigeway in the proccess. And just because you didn't adjust the end float. How will you ever live with yourself*

*This MIGHT not happen

More to the point, how do you check / adjust the "end float"? I'm guessing it's the sideways movement of the rocker arm on its pivot?

(edit - well of course on the boxer engine it's not "sideways" it's "up and down" - ie along the pivot shaft).

Typical American instructions, along with the servo brake bleeding instructions, you can ignore 9/10ths of the guff written.

It's a 5 minute job to adjust the end float ( if it's needed) :thumb

Spill the beans then Neil :D

Loosen the the three torq bolts and one nut - just pinch them up finger tight - tap the bottom rocker holder with a small hammer or any type of heavy screwdriver until you have the correct gap on both sides - Retighten the bolts and nuts and adjust the valve clearences . Job done.

It's actually taken me longer to type how to do it, then to "do it" :D
