rocker gasket leak

Rocker gasket

Mine went in Poland during a trip but got home and had it done under warranty. Done 6200 miles. Then the chain went 200 miles later.

All seems fine at the mo.

Left side on top. If you cant see it, you don't have it. It's very visible.

Rocker cover gasket

Has anyone had a rocker cover gasket on their engine go?? The gasket on my F800GS was replaced under warranty on an 8 mth old bike with only 10k miles on the clock. A tell tail sign is oil on one side of the engine.

Noticed this morning that there seems to be oil on the same side of the engine again (clutch side) so looks like it may have gone again... The bike is only 10 mths old with 12k miles on the clock!!

Trying to find out anyone elses experience with this. Wondering about any modifications to stop this happening after my bike is out of warranty in summer 2011.

Cheers

Mine has just been fixed on a 10 month old bike with 6k on it (left hand side leak).
They never bothered with a new gasket just some type of sealant.
It has now done another 2k since then with no leaks.
I am back in the dealers on Saturday and don't know whether to complain or not.

Just about to do mine .... out of warranty (typical!) but it was a stupid mistake on some motors where not enough sealant was used on assembly. Cuprinol - if there's no leak is there anything to complain about?

I'm going to use a Loctite anaerobic sealant that I've used with great success before - and plenty of it lolz...

Tip du Jour ... when the cover's off, check the head bolts underneath - apparently there's one on the LHS that has been known to be left untorqued...

Had to have three on mine

Under warranty, done twice, but the leak came back again

Third time, again under warranty, a new rocker/valve cover fitted, with new gasket, and all seems OK. Done probably 3,000 miles and no sign of re-occurence :thumb

I understand that maybe the valve cover can distort/warp

Finally Micky I beat you on the numbers :D The mileage you win but I've had 4 replaced and I see it has gone again. Thankfully BMW pick it up on Monday and they can sort it this time :blast

Mine also done twice under warranty. Second time they replaced the rocker/valve cover with a new gasket. Took a week, as there were no covers in the country at the time....well so they said. All fine now and it’s been a few thousand Miles already.

done twice under warranty. since it was off the last time, they did the valve clearances too.

When you say "they did the valve clearances" d'ya mean they just checked 'em ... or did they want adjusting?

Micky
in your 40,000 miles have you had the valve clearances adjusted?
Haven't had mine checked as yet as it is an option on the service the engine still sounds OK

Plus seeing as you are a gent of a certain age, not too unlike myself how do the earplugs cope with hairy lugs!

just checked 'em micky. didn't need adjusting, although it was part of the 24k service. they don't seem to require much attention. getting the bike prepared next week for a big trip (new chain and sprockets, suspension linkages greased up etc, serviced, new plugs). given we had much of the same stuff done at the same time (teething probs on a new bike), we've probably covered the same bases. however, is there anything in particular you've had trouble with over the 40k mile mark that i should either bring or swap out now? I've had my bearings replaced under warranty too, so hopefully these should be ok.

Hi Colin... 40,000 miles and the clearances haven't required adjustment. Been checked a couple of times and the clearances haven't moved :thumb

Haven't had a problem with 'airy lugs' neither

Rear wheel bearings t'other week at 39,000miles, steering head bearings at 19,000 miles but replacements still fine :thumb
Heavy on my rear pads but original front pads still in

Other than that no probs worth mentioning :thumb

Leaking gasket

Hi Guys,

I'm a newb at spotting a problem on my bike, but when I was checking the oil level, I saw my whole left side of the engine in a black greasy substance. Needless to say I was alarmed, but due to this post I now know what the issue is. I'll contact my dealer...strange thing is that I never had a problem with my 800, except for the headlight bolt falling out :blast

Looks like I'm going to be joining this prestigious club. Not loosing much oil (not enough to tell on the dip-stick), but a definite film of of oil on the front and l/h side of the engine. Let's see what they say when i go in for the new chain & 12k service on Friday...
