ROLLING RESTORATION?

Keep it up sir... this is inspiring me to do more on my old 1150 donkey... She's done 87,000 miles so far, and I'm interested in your engine rebuild, been pondering it myself...

SO FAR....

OK, the powder coating was a disaster...

Apparently the guy could'nt get the powder to take to the barrel fins :nenau

So I decided to paint it myself. I used 2 tins of Hammerite smooth rite and to be honest am pleased with the results!

Here are the heads and barrels before

And after

Although there is a fair amount of corrosion on the crank cases they look a whole lot better than they did before.

I even spent about an hour preparing the front cover, which looked like this...

And now looks like this!

I decided that spending a fortune wasn't necessary as it will never be a show winner, just wanted to make it look better.

I should be assembling the engine next weekend.

SOME MORE PICS

Here's the engine painted.

The before pictures make it look better!!!

Should be back together for the end of July.

Forks next!!

Nice job.

I want to do this to my 1100 which is in a similar condition.

I think im going for the silver hammerite option seeing the result you have had and reading about your powder coat issues.

I plan to do mine through the winter - not dieal for painting but a few heaters and I should be ok.

Engine assembly

Just thought i would post some pics of the engine as its going back together now.

The crank and bearings were within tolerance at 115k mls!!

I have fitted new timing chains and blades..

Bolts oiled at the ready, plenty of gorilla snot!!!

Casing bolts ready, excuse my OCD..

And its closed!!!

More next week...

Right, couple of hours work and we are here...

Front end built, oil pump and auxiliary shaft chain on..

Conrods on, new bolts!

Pistons in barrels ready....

Heads all built up..

And were on!!!

First head on, no problem, as was the second..

Looks so much better now, I think it could be rolling next week!!!

Here's a picture before....

More next week!!

Excellent work and great pix. Thanks for sharing. Never seen the internal workings of an oilhead engine in such detail. Very interesting indeed. Have you thought about buying a new replacement front engine cover? IIRC they're not that expensive and I think it would really finish off the bike. Whilst it's much better than before, the bubbling lets down the rest of your work in my opinion. Look forward to the updates. Thanks:thumb

Looking really good there. If your OCD's as bad as you think, i reckon a replacement front cover's a good idea too. Yes, the original keeps the restoration intact, but it appears to be the most badly corroded part. Don't forget to strip and respray the new front cover with the smoothrite though, or you'll only have to do it again later.:thumb

Thanks for the comments.

The reason I didnt buy a new front cover was it would look different to the rest of the engine, plus, the pictures make the engine look better than it actually is so a new front cover would have looked really out of place if that makes sense? I am going to fit a crud catcher eventually so it might not be so obvious?

And they are £130......

I've had the rear frame powder coated black along with the centre stand, also the driveshaft casing done in the original silver.

Had the fork legs and mounting brace painted and fitted a new ball joint,

Whaddya think??

Cant wait to get it together now........

Update on the rest.

So, this has gone from a rolling restoration to the real thing....

Heres a few more pictures.

Gearbox on...

A bit more...

Just the front end to go then!

Should be done by next weekend.....

Fantastic - love these restorations by pics - makes me feel really thick - you are a very clever Tosser :beerjug:

Impressive work Steve, following with interest, how did setting up the valve timing go with those new chains? always thought that might be tricky, workshop looks pro?

Mark

fantastic :clap:clap:clap its good to see and oldun escaping the scrappys:beerjug:

thats some work space you have there too :cool::cool:

Nice one Smudger

Be careful setting up the heads old bean ??

Make sure ONLY one cam at TDC on firing stroke and Other 180 degrees out on the camwheel (best way I can think to explain)

I have thought of trying one as a big bang engine because theoretically it will run but feck knows for how long ?? :D

All OK methinks.

Valve timing is easy-peasy, although the marks at the cam ends never seem to line up exactly??

Got the fairings off the RT at the moment Mark, being painted, I'll stick a pic up when theyre back & on :thumb2
