I'm not sure about other manufacturers but with Tentbox for example they send out a two man team to install it on your vehicle.

That’s fine if you’re leaving it on all the time but I used to remove mine if I wasn’t planning to use it because it knocked the fuel consumption to pieces on my truck.
Absolutely nothing wrong with a conventional tent, I own multiple tents. However there are situations where for example you can not pitch a tent for example where the ground is a rock base. In that situation a roof tent is perfect.
Yeah, I plan to leave it on all the time.
Hmm, now those roof tents look first class. A little more than I had budgeted for, but I think looking at them they may well be worth it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I doubt a wee canvas roof tent, with or without a ladder, would stop a tiger known to be able to leap around 3 to 4meters vertical!

I know someone who does a lot of 4x4 overlanding and whilst he has rooftents for the job, he uses a Swagman tent a lot of the time to camp
Rooftents he says are heavy and cumbersome off-road at times
So unless it’s African adventures he uses a Swagman or hotel

The gas struts on their roof tent are exposed to the elements, dust water etc. Not really a good idea.
I've got several ground tents and one roof tent (and have done a lot of overlanding), the roof one is a lot more comfortable and warmer and mine isn't so heavy as to upset handling, it's about 30kg I think. They definitely have their place, not just to avoid animals but for ease of set up, camping on bad ground, comfort, using a duvet rather than sleeping bags, etc. Even the wife really likes it.
As with bikes, you need to consider all options.

I've just dropped back into this thread to check for any updates and to say I have just found another brand which looks half decent....IKamper. I particularly like the SkyCamp 3.0.
Does anyone have any experience of this brand or model?
Anyway they apparently have a distributer/stockist in Halifax so I'm planning on having a visit tomorrow if they're open.

If you had a suitable garage, you could obviously have it hung from the roof/ceiling on ratchet straps and lower it onto the roof bars (but can't imagine many have garages that big?)
