Visited Rorke's Drift in 2006 when on a bike tour of SA. The road to it is gravel after you turn off the tarmac but I can't recall for how long. We had a guided tour and it was fascinating. The actual size of the area they defended is smaller than you imagine and what surprised me is that only 17 British soldiers died in the action. Well worth doing I probably have some pics somewhere but will need to find out where they are stored.
well worth a visit, esp if you have a tour guide/historian that can detail it all. I climbed up the hill with my guide and you can see the dongas etc used to creep along. Amazing. Even for a saffa to see! My pics look similar except no live people! If you get a good historian, go..otherwise it'll be like another UK landscape view. Nice for 3 minutes then....
Before relocating permanently to London, I had interests in a Motorcycle Tour Company doing off road tours of the area around the battlefields. Some nice dirt roads in the area. If anyone is keen for more info in the area, contact me anytime.....
