Rose tinted specs.

Been riding the GS for 2 months or so now in appalling weather most of the time, and looking forward to warmer days. And what a fantastic bike the GS is! Every time I take it out the thing just grows on me. I was out over the weekend, and for the first time I noticed how much my speed had safely increased on my favourite twisty. One of the fastest country roads (national speed limit) has some peachy bends, which the GS simply floats around, roughly 15 mph faster than the F650 I used to ride them on.
I had until last Sunday regarded the 650 as a great bike up to the 80 mph mark, until I swapped with the new owner (my brother) to let him ride the GS.
We set off and o’h boy did the 650 feel weird! And it wasn’t until I met the first bend that I appreciated what a superb handling machine the GS is.
And the point I want to make is, has any one else looked on previous bikes with fond memories, and ridden them again post GS? Makes me think now, was that GT500 Suzuki actually as good as I thought it was, 25 years ago?
Saying that though, given the chance to ride a GS back then to compare the two, then having to wait 25 years for a GS! Don’t bear thinking about!

better than sliced bread

I picked up my new Adventure yesterday late in the afternoon and managed to get 1 hour or so out on the roads before i thought, 'mmmm...maybe i should risk it with new tyres, slippy roads, etc' so got home.

The bike is fantastic and even within the 1 hour ride that i had, i felt i had more confidence than the 3.5 years i had been riding my Suzuki TLs. Your correct about it floating round corners, (should i change the magic carpet rubber, to Dunlop ).:)

Anyway can't wait for work to finish tonight as it's another ride out.

Graeme

P.S Sliced bread is still slightly better, not much though.

:P

often think back to my Trophy 1200 with fond memories, the awesome torque from the engine, any gear any speed it would pull like the proverbial train.

Crap at slow speed tho, below 60mph the engine feels like its trying really hard even tho it would only be spinning 3000rpm

But for cruising at 80, 90, 100, it flew. :D

T2

did I hear you correctly? You went form a TL1000 to the GS? Wow. Now theres a comparision!

I'm only a month into a GS too from 2 x VFR's, trallies, GPX750, blah blah and think I've found the bike I should have had all along. One of th reasons I bought it was to slow down. Fat chance.

Eunuch

You did hear right I went from a bad handling TLs, (still had the original shock on it), to the GS.

I had always fancied a GS, but every time i went to the dealer and said i have a Jap something or other he did the old 'sharp intake of breath' and I walked away.....but this time i thought 'oh well and spent the money.

The GS has given me a grin from ear to ear; I was out on it last night....bloody cold over Skipton to Harrogate, but lots of fun. Only 15 miles to go before i can hit the 5000 rpm mark.

Cheers GRR

Whoooooooo T2 ggr the turbo kicks in at 5000 on my ADV and it still eats the bends!:moped:

Good man

T2,

I never ceased to be amazed by the vast range of different bikes people come from to get to a GS. Its not like you bought a Transalp, then an Africa Twin or Tiger before you went to a GS, you just did it from a head bangers Suzuki TL1000. I'm reading VFR's (fairy nuff), but TL's, ZX6-R's, R1's, Blades, etc. BTW, the VFR forum is beating the B*W's (why does every not say B*W properly?) hard right now because so many seem to be changing over.

Good on ya mate. Much like me, I've found the bike I always should have had. I've come out of the bikers closet so to speak. Anyone started GS Pride?

So the best of both worlds – a broad grin with the 1150 but a “long day ” with the Airhead.

Para

yes it is a long day on a old boxer, takes even longer to get off one if you do more than 25 miles----

:D :D :D :D

Look – if you were on a RTW and in the middle of some god forsaken place ,desert or third world country like (Shepherd Bush), without any mechanics, proper spare parts, water, women, food, medicines, TV, Sky, bath crystals, computer, GS Forum and the like – what would you have

the Airhead of course

Para

an old merc diesel------------ no driveshaft failure, no gearbox failures, no electrical failures, no collapsing wheel bearing failure, no rocker bearing failure, no coil failure,

Done Deal

Went "ski"ing today (Spending the Kids Inheritance).

Been taking the new 04 Silver Adv around the highways and byeways of Dorset and Wiltshire all afternoon and got 95 miles on the clock. Had to wash the muck off when I got home cos it threw a few showers - made the roads nice and slippery with the salt/water mix. ABS works a treat specially meeting a school bus on a single lane road.

Seeing the several posts on "running in", haven't been in same gear for more than a few minutes at a time, and not being too gentle on the throttle on or off. Saw 5K rpm briefly passing a slow tractor.

Now where shall I go tomorrow........................

On my Twinspark Adventure...

I did the running in as per the book, it's only 1000kms (600miles) and I figured it's a good time for me to get used to the bike as well, after that I let hell break loose, I often get to 7000rpm,(funny how after a year of Beemers that seems a high number:rolleyes: ),occasionally hit the rev inhibitor, and frequently do a 140km trip at 160+kmh. NO problems so far... (5 months & 12000kms)

The oil consumption seemed high up until about 6500kms (4000 miles) and then dropped to practically nothing, I've read lots of posts in different forums about "riding it like you stole it" from day one, maybe it works for some but as the boxer is a little bit special, and BMW have been making them longer than anybody, I thought I'd take their advice on this one:rolleyes:

It doesn't look anything like that actually, but this right-wing bed of facism doesn't support the Greek alphabet :)

As for the T-shirts... I'll take mine in English:beerjug:
