Rotten cover restoration

Are we all in the same dinghy? I've seen no mention of the cause of this delamination. Here in the US under that crappy cover is an even crappier formed foam insulator which holds water better than a Holland dike. In local forum circles we recommend removing them and using them as kitchen scrub sponges. It certainly can't hurt to put a notch at the base of the cover to enhance drainage. IMHO.. paint on !

Foam was long gone from mine maybe it's to dampen vibes from the alternator belt ? if it holds water no wonder these corrode :blast

My front cover has rotted at the bottom edge looking like its been hit by stone chips. But when I took the alternator belt cover off, there was as much rot inside the cover as outside. The sound deadening foam was dry.
It looks like the plastic edge has fretted thought the paint and caused the corrosion.

Mine looks like stone chips and then water getting under that.
First GS out of the four that i've had that has gone there

Not sure what type of alloy it is or could be magnesium like the rocker covers if bare it's very susceptible to corrosion

No paint is perfect so sooner or later it will pinhole. This paint is so tough it can't be grit blasted away without gouging the metal. It will eventually pinhole but it's very toughness hides corrosion running underneath. The rest is inevitable

Dilemma now, clean the engine or dirty the new cover?

Getting a new one under warranty next week - result :beerjug:

Mine has failed right where its protected (from stones) by the exhaust cross-over pipe and its also gone inside where it never sees any stones. The widest area of damage is under the belt cover joint face around the bottom bolt.

Whip the belt cover off and put it back with some silicone sealer. That will stop it vibrating and fretting thought the paint and causing the same problems as the old one. Leave a gap at the bottom so any water can escape.
