ok guys, going to ask for some of your wisdom, jumped on the bike last night, driving up the road and everything seemed fine. went to overtake a car and gave the old girl a good handfull of gas. she started to fart and bang as the revs slowly picked up then went smooth and shot past the car. if i put the gas on slow and easy, doesnt seem to be a problem. it only happens when you give it a good sharp handful the the old lady doesnt want to know for a short period. any help would be great. cheers guys

What year is it? Could be your FPC on the way out:nenau

As Stevie73 says above, if your FPC hasn't been changed good possibility it could be it. My bike hesitated a couple of times a couple of weeks before the FPC packed in, it was the only sign I had something might be wrong but because it still ran I didn't bother investigating as it as it only did it a couple of times. As soon as the bike cut out I changed the FPC and the bike started immediately. No probs since.

Sounds like one or more of the coils on the way out to me...

Any other symptoms? How is it on tickover? What about fuel consumption, has that changed?

update

just been out for a run, if you give the gas nice and easy not to much of a problem but as i sad in first post it dies a death with a quick twist of the wrist. i went up a duel carrigeway and had the buke sat at a steady 70, as i went to give it just a little more gas it started to fart and bang to the point sometimes i had to turn the gas off for it to pick up and run normally again. also noticed when you come off the gas she seems to be popping a bit more than it used to. are there any simple ways to check FPC and also stick coils?

sorry, forgot to mention it is a 2006 model.not really noticed any major change in fuel consumption. everything was fine when i used it last night. an hour later i jumped on the bike to go home and problem was there

Make sure you have not disturbed the connector down on the nearside throttle body as this can give the same symptoms and quite easy to do.

My 2006 GS exhibited similar mid range flat spot. Really bad. Just like you, it would let you down during a quick overtake. My bike has Remus headers, Akra can, Techlusion black box and had a K&N filter at the time.

I reverted to standard air filter.
Adjusted the Tehclusion down as it was over fuelling under acceleration.

But the final cure was 4 new spark plugs. Running well now.

Ps - I replaced the FPC a long time ago one sunny afternoon, but it had never actually let me down

Pps - the ring antenna was a different story

I will give odds on it being a failing/failed coil.

I wrote a "how to" a while ago. Basically remove all the coil leads except 1 and start the bike (do not ride it). If it runs the coil is working. Work round all 4 coils in a similar manner until the bike does not start, that is the duff one.

Watch out when removing the wiring to the coils as the clips are old and brittle.

If you want to be certain that it is the coil and not a plug then when you find the dud coil/spark plug try the working coil from the opposite cylinder.

All this should not take more than 5 minutes and is the only method that worked for me. I did try removing one coil at a time but did not show up the failed coil.

Been out in the garage today and checked each coil in turn and hey presto, one has failed. My arse nearly hit the ground when i found out the price of a new one but my little girl will be back on the road tomorrow. Many thanks to everyone for input and help. Cheers guys

Well just think of the money you have saved in having someone else diagnose it, or worse replace something that didn't need replacing!

Makes subscribing to the site look like a bargain :D
