Hi All

Can you help
2003 1150 adv with Y (just fitted 100 miles ago to shed weight) and OE pipe the bike is quite hesitant when rolling on the power in 5th 6th gear sort of 60 to 70 MPH and up.
Some popping and banging on the over run but not a lot
Its not like it was !!! :o
Its not long had a dealer 18k service

Have asked another main dealer and they have suggested ½ hour diagnostic
Also
That the y and oe pipe loses power - the best option being to keep the CAT and fit the remus end pipe minus baffle pipe. This isn’t too loud as the cat is classed as a silencer and it lets the engine breath the best.
That the valve gaps may be tight when hot ?

I have tried the Y and Remus pipe but none of it lined up right and melted the pannier rack coating :spitfire

Doing several thousand miles in a week in mid June in Europe am I best taking it all back to standard or is it likely that a simple diagnostic check and an adjustment will fix the Y and OE pipe problem ?

Your experience and advice sort

That the y and oe pipe loses power
Sorry can't help with advice other than as you say return to standard and work from there. Would like to know if quote above is true though. Mine has had that config since I bought it, never had any fueling problems. Should I replace my OE can?

the dealer said that there wasn't much if any gain in the mid range but a loss on the top end power with Y and OE pipe.

I thought it interesting that keeping the Cat and an open remus improved things without excessive noise.

Might just go back to Standard for the trip and then have a play with set ups later

I have a CAT/Remus set-up on my '02 1150, but I have retained the baffle and mine seems more responsive. I have a "Y" piece sitting here with the intention of fitting it, I just haven't so far.............!

Yes - Cat + Remus End Can!!

Hi HRO,
I have an '01 1150GS . I've owned it from new and it has 70K on the clock now. At about 20K I fitted a Remus Y-piece and Titanium Revolution can - 'cos everybody seemed to think it made a huge difference??
Anyway, for few days it seemed "great" - made a noise like a real bike  etc.
But I quickly grew fed up of the noise - attracts too much attention etc, and I also felt that any supposed gain in the free-revving side was offset by a fairly big loss in bottom end pull/tractability? - which I think is what your noticing? and at the end of the day this is what the GS is all about and what makes it such a fast "real roads" bike?, - so I refitted the Cat and used the Remus end can with baffle pipe removed. the bike has now been like this for 50K and it is a superb combination ( I think!! ). it's still very quite, but has a lovely soft, deep exhaust note when pulling hard - much nicer than either the original or any y-piece set up, and I think you can "feel" the engine breathing better. With the Y-piece I think you loose too much back pressure for the standard valve timing etc - I know you can use Techlusions etc, but I'm not sure it's worth the bother - your trying to change the GS into another bike  .
For the last 20K I've also used Champion EON2 spark plugs, which (in my opinion ;) ) make a huge difference also to the sweet-running of the single spark 1150.
I know this exhaust combination is uncommon and may well be ridiculed in pub arguments etc by the y-piece brigade  but I genuinely think it's the best - especially combined with the EON2 plugs and there's absolutely no popping etc with this set up.
I would recommend GSers at least try this combination when messing about with exhaust side of things before making a final decision?. I sold the Y-piece shortly after trying this set up 'cos I knew I'd never use it again. :D :D

Cheers.............................Grizzly

I had a similar problem with my 02 GSA. Applied the Steptoe method and yes there was a noticeable difference.Running smoother and feeling more taught all round. It may not work for all modifications, however, its set up for 1150gs with remus.

The , no CAT and Y piece has been done to death in this forum , the only advise on if there is any gain , or not is a back to back dyno test.
A fellow GSer posted this test with the bike in standard trim , CAT and OE silencer, and the with Y piece and STD can the dyno results which showed better low end torque and power and mid to higher range being no different to standard.
I run a Y piece and standard can and find this much better in the lower rev range , than with the CAT, this combination gives a little deeper exhaust note, without giving you a headache after a couple of hours .
The down side of the Y piece is the tendency to have the ocassional 'pop' on the overun, again, lots of potential fixes on this board, not found one that works yet though .
The upside is not having to drag the heavy CAT around.
Some folks run quite happily with the CAT and no silencer.
