Rough running

On the bike this morning, noticed a slight rough running. Barely noticeable at first, but just didn't 'feel' right. Once I got onto the faster roads, it was definitely hesitating, and runs rougher than normal on tickover. Now, researching this ever useful forum makes me think I've got the coil problem as it's a twin spark bike. Thing is, I gave it a jetwash yesterday, and thought I was being very careful. Maybe something got soaked, but it was ok riding home yesterday afternoon. Should they suddenly go like that, or degrade gradually? Once Motorworks site is working I'll check the price...someone mentioned around 60 quid?? I presume it's best to buy in pairs? Bugger

coils can go , but both dont usualy go at same time , check the power connections to the coil.

Twin spark coil caps usually break down and you won't notice on one side so much, but if the second one starts to go you'll obviously start to notice it more.

Pull the bottom plug caps off ( these use the normal single coil) and see if it runs on just the main plugs. If missing or not firing on one side swop the cap coils over and see if the problem moves with it, or replace the secondary cap on the side not runnning and see if that cures it. Which will also show you which side sides or if both have failed.

Cheers UGG, and Steptoe, I'll start pulling leads off at the weekend and see where the fault lies. I knew I shouldn't have given it the annual wash.... 60 quid for a bloody coil. I'm in the wrong line of work

Wow

I hadn't noticed how much the performance had deteriorated on the bike. Got the new coil through the post from Motorworks this morning (just one), changed it and the difference is astonishing. Feels like a new bike. No surging, hesitating, nice and smooth all the way through the range. Not bad for 87,000kms, that's the first one I've had to change. Right hand side one will probably start now. I'll save up for a 2nd one.

It was running soooo nicely, I took it for a run along the coast. Nice.....
