This is a great route, as it starts off following the river in the Naturpark Obere Donau, lined with cliffs, great scenery and twisty roads. The last bit of road from Stanzach to Namlos / Brand is one of the best roads you will ride, trust me! And when based in Reutte for a couple of days there are great roads all around! :thumb Approx 6 hrs

That is my preferred route too from the Southern Black Forest to the Fern Pass:thumb2

Use it all the times, I've been down there

The route up the Donau is one of my favs

did you stay with Elisabeth Schwarz when you were in Stanzach?

The Namlos road is a beaut and there's a "hidden" alpine hut village half way over the pass that was used by Stanzach villagers to tend their cattle during the winter in years gone by. The huts are now holiday lets but well worth a visit. Some of them are in their original state.

Looks good - anything to avoid the congestion north of lake Constance :thumb2

Going anyway near Lake Constance is a frikkin pain, towns, traffic lights nothing to look at and very slow. We did it once, never again, it's always good to go this way, open twisty roads, great scenery and you arrive chilled :thumb2

Hi Guys

you seem to know this area very well.

What time of year are the pictures taken and would early May say 1st week, be too cold and would there still be a chance of snow along this route.

thanks for your help.

For a good look at historic weather data, go to:

The site is quirky but you'll get the hang of it.

Is this a worthy route to bypass the Lake Konstanz traffic jam and jump on to the Deutsche Alpenstrasse to the Eagles Nest ?

The same route converted into a Mapsource track, using Tyre.

It would be easy enough to convert the track to a route, simply by tracing over it. Or a 660 could convert it.

Forgive my ignorance but can you not follow a track?

The route up the Donau is one of my favs

Is that the route we took to Garmisch from Bad Peterstal?

We didn't do the river Donau bit though

We did the hohe alpenstrasse bit at the bottom
Fab road

Thinking of staying over at Bad Peterstal, a couple of days in Garmisch, down to John and Ros in Malta ( Austria) and back again :Motomartin
