Arranging a last min trip with the wife leaving Uk on the 9th and have tunnel booked back on the 23 August .

So far the plan is to head down to Lake como area spend 5 or 6 nights there and come back .

Its not a trip where we want to be on the bike every day and so far the plan is

Riems for the first night , then to Mohouse for the second then to Andermatt staying for three nights to chill and do some of the passes . Then down to Como area then back . We have Riems booked for two nights on the 21/22 then home.

We are wondering on which route to come back to Reims on and if There is any better locations to stop than Como .

That rather depends on where you plan on starting from, if it’s not to be Lake Como.

Are there better places to stay than Lake Como?

Lake Como is nice, of course. One thing is certain, you’ll probably not be alone in August.

To save us using a calendar, how many days have you set aside to get from Lake Como (or somewhere else) to get to Reims for your two night stop on the way back?

Hi
We have from 14th to 19th planned in Como area 5 nights that gives 2 days to get to Reims.

We could cut down to 4 nights in the Como area . Was thinking of the other lakes and they may be quieter or are there better options than Como ?

August, Italy, Lake Como (or even Lake Grada) = and hordes of likeminded population from all over the world, so expect to be very busy.

Lake Lugano or Maggiore are other options which aren’t far out of reach.

August...
Lake Como....
Hoards of awful tourists...
Inflated prices
Poor service as everywhere is stretched
Hot thunderstorms too
Congested roads
Thieves busy

Bonkers to go then but that being said, I wish you and your wife a happy holiday!

It's a procession riding round Como in the summer. Best avoided.

I guess you have chosen Mulhouse, as you intend to go to Italian lakes, and Lake Como in particular?

If not Lake Como in August, well where else? The Italian lakes are the Italian lakes, as simple as that. They will all be very busy, as you’ll not be the only tourist thinkng “You know what, I think I’ll go to the Italian lakes in the height of summer”.

Before anyone goes recommending alternatives:

A. Are you stuck on Mulhouse?

B. Are you dead set on northern Italy?

C. Is there anywhere you DON’T want to go?

Stuck with August due to leave issues.

Mulhouse can get binned just seemed a doable stop for her indoors before dropping into Switzerland.

Not stuck on Northern Italy as such, seemed a good spot for a longer pause in the trip.

If you are after lakes, try these in Austria. We were here last June (ok I know it isn’t August) but, might be less crowded compared to ever popular Italian lakes.
The nearby lakes can provide you with a few days of exploring by bike or indeed on foot.

We even stayed at Hotel Jacob,…

…which is located mere minutes walk from the lake and the beach side eatery/bar, which was excellent too.

If your partner/wife not keen on riding pillion for some distance, then replace her with a roll bag on the pillion seat stuffed with her riding gear, then fly her out to Salzburg, pick her up from there in 3 or so days time and ride to the Fuschl, which is only about an hour away from the airport. It certainly be something that I would do if my wife was not keen to take 6 days out of say 10 day trip, just be getting there and back on the back of a bike.

Also, if you haven’t booked accommodation then your chances of finding any are pretty limited

In Reims (if you haven't already booked) I can personally recommend this Hotel, with gated car park.

Google also tells me that the room is available for 1 night 9-10 of August.

It is out of town, and is very easy to reach from the Autoroute or any other road type you choose to ride, on the doorstep of Champagne grape plantations.

A tram ride (tram stop only 5 minute walk away) from the hotel to central Reims.

Finding some but not great, now looking like it Austria !

this is a less shit hotel in the city centre https://reims-centre-cathedrale.campanile.com/fr-fr/ with garage parking

walking distance to bars, restaurants and a view of the Cathedral

easy to get to just off the old autoroute that went through the city centre
Thanks, but already have one sorted , Best western, not to far from that one I think, has a garage as well stayed there a couple of years back when I did my first trip with my son , that was fairly similar down to Como

I never "wing" the first or last night, or any stays of more than 1 night where we plan looping ride outs (much easier to plan your circular route if you know where it will start and end) but when moving one from one place to another in the Alps we often just rode until we felt like stopping and then pick a place along the route....

...More nervous of thsi approach these days as it seems like many hotels are closing, not at the same rates as the UK, but a shift from Hotels to Air BnB has happened and disrupted the classic hotel / pension businesses meaning less of them, and possibly lesser chances of seeing "zimmer frei" signs (other languages will be encountered) at the roadside - but not done a big trip this way since pre-covid so I could be wrong.

The compromise is to maybe book on a website the following days accomodation, or even whilst you are having your lunch do a web search for that evenings stay.
