Going to have a go 21 Dales ride as posted further down this page next weekend, anybody got any ideas getting from South Yorks to North Yorks and not going all the way on the M1/A1 have tried various ways over the years but can,t find a way through West Yorks and keeping a steady pace.Any ideas?

You have the same problem coming north we have getting to the Peak district. It takes hours to cross keeping of motorways and major towns.
I make a days riding just doing this section, if I want to go further I just accept I have to use the motorways.
The easiest corridor between is to travel from Sheffield to Skipton. Sheffield - Stocksbridge -Holmfirth-Meltham-Ripponden-Hebden Bridge-Oxenhope-Sutton in Craven-Skipton. Its 60 miles and will take about 2-1/2 hours depending on traffic. Some very nice bits of road in that route, but unfortunately and equal amount of frustrating roads and tedious traffic.

My current favourite http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie...3.749929,-1.311493&spn=0.293959,0.570602&z=11

1.5 miles of A1 proper, little bit of old A1 rest is nice flowing roads. Even going round Ripon is dead easy and a clear route even on weekday mornings.

Only downer at moment is the Cattal bridge closed for approx 8 weeks from 8th February so not sure if it will have re-opened yet (it is just North of Tadcaster). Can alter map to show you suggested detour (not following diversion signs) that adds about 10mins.

I do a variation on that theme, but it's even longer at 94 miles :thumb2

Sheffield - Snake Pass - Glossop - Holme Moss - Holme Moss - Delph - Ripponden - Hebden Bridge - Oxenhope - Laneshaw Bridge - Skipton Old Road - Carlton - Skipton

Thanks:clap just spent an hour plotting it on mapsource :green gri looking forward to it after 4 years or so of trying several different ways plus the usual M1/A1 senario

If you just need to get up North quickly don't mess about round Cattle, you will find the old great North road runs next to the A1 from Walshford to Dishforth, a turn off takes you under the A1 to Ripon.
I always use this road, unlike the A1 in the event of a jam you can turn round and use the side roads. Its never busy as most people don't know it exists.
